it wont stay running unless i have my foot on the gas pedal. would a bad battery keep it from staying on? the Alt is good and i have to jump it to start it everytime.

could this have anything to do with the carb? would that be why i have to keep my foot on it a little bit. if i give it a little bit of gas, it will stay on. could the idle be set too low? how do i adjust it?

also, what do i set the timing to? there are 3 marks and mine is set right on the middle one.

THIS THING IS GONNA RUN RIGHT, DAMNIT!!!

it could be bad timing that could explain y u have to jump start it, and y it wont run at low idle, is there any numbers in the timing marks, i think you put it so its on 0, also check for spark n check points, as for the carby i duno much about tuning them but im sure theres some guys on here who do or could point you in the right direction

clean the marks off well. I believe the way they are set is when your looking at them far left is 0*, middle is 6* (where it should be) and the right is 12* (where i run mine). Does the motor sputter at all? Becouse if you idle is too low and youve been starting it alot a battery will go dead perty quick. Especially if it had been drain before.

Set the timing at 6 degrees before top dead center at 900 RPM. Point gap should be set between .016 and .022 inches. Set the idle adjustmet screw ( The one with the coil spring around it on the bottom neck of the carb) about 2 & 1/2 turns out from closed. Then turn the throttle adjustment screw (The one on the linkage on the side where the throttle cable hooks up) so the engine idles. Then fine tune the idle speed with the first screw to fastest idle. Probably between 1 & 1/2 to 3 turns out. Finally adjust the the idle speed with the second screw to 900 RPM. Actually, I like mine at 1000 RPM, cuz I have air conditioning. Spending a few bucks for a dwell meter would make the above adjustments easier.

thanks for the info. also, there is a ticking noise that i think is comming from the head. what could that be. is it true that these are a hemi head? like, the same thing as a Dodge Hemi head?

The ticking is probably a loose tappet. Pull the valve cover off and adjust them cold with the engine off using a flat feeler guage. If you buy a Haynes manual for Luv, it'll tell you the gap and the pattern. If I remember right, I think you only rotate the engine twice. I just put it in 4th and push it in gear to rotate the engine.

if the wires going to the carb are unplugged then it will run like crap. there is a anti dieseling selinoid that helps the engine die when you cut the key off. if it is unplugged, it will not idle. it is the hexshaped thing with 1 wire sticking out of it on the carb. you can hook that wire up to the + side of the battery and see if it makes it run right. i've never heard any of these engines not have a ticking noise. the way the valves are supposed to be adjusted always leaves a little moise. better to have them too loose than too tight. the head is a cross flow head. exhaust manifold on one side and intake manifold on the otherside. a hemi head is short for hemispherical. which means you have the spark plug in the center with the valves on each side of the spark plug. so you have a spark plug in the middle of the head with a plug wire running through the valve cover. the luv head is not a hemi head.

I thought "hemi" only refered to the shape of the combustion chamber, not the position of the spark plug. Not that I say my LUV has a "hemi" in it, but the factory manual does describe it as a "cross flow hemischerical head".

It could be your float adjustment. If it is getting a drizzle of fuel into the second barrel it is your float. The timing should be set to I think 15 degrees.
