i have a 72 luv with a 72 celica 1.9l engine in it.....it runs GREAT! when i can get it to start....i can jump it and let it run for quite some time and then shut it off but it wont even turn over when i try to start it again...Also, i cannot find ANY kinda of timing mark on the pulley or anywhere near it. How can i time it without a mark!??!

When you jump it to get it to run drive it to a battery place and have them check your charging system. Sounds like the battery is toast.

Are the terminals and bat cables clean? Do the lights and other accessories come on if the truck isn't running?

Do you get any clicking noise when you try the starter. Also, turn your lights on and see if they dim considerably when you try to start the engine. Both of these would be indications of low voltage, either because of a bad battery, or bad connections somewhere. Even though it is called a 12 volt system, 12 volts is on the low side for your battery. You should be showing at least 13.5 - 14 volts on a good battery.

.....Theres no way that the truck would ever start if theres no Neg. Terminal cable coming off the battery. The charged electrons would not be able to complete their circuit, thus making no electron movement...and blah blah blah a bunch of Circuit analysis is invovled... The ground terminal needs to be grounded to some part of the frame. I have seen some bolted right down to the frame, some to the alternator brakcet, some to a heavy body mount, etc. As long as it has some connection (a good one) to the frame you should be fine. But if you don't have a negative battery terminal cable...you have to get one of those...your gonna need it....

i think i know exactly what your problem is. i had this exact same problem today.your alternator is not cahrging your battery. your woltage regulator has gone out and it is not allowing the battery to charge. your voltage regulator, (it is in the haynes manual) is either on the right or left side of the the engine caompartment, bolted to one of the fender wells.

what i did, was i got some wire, adn some of these female connectors, and a toggle switch. i took the plug out of the back of the alternator, and then i put one of the female connectors on the terminal that has an "F" on it, and then routed it to the toggle switch inside the cab. then rout the other side of the toggle switch to the + side of the battery. i dont have one yet, but i am going to get a voltage gage, so that way when the battery gets charged up, i can flip the toggle switch and stop charging the battery.

it also could be a bad alternator. just put a peice of wire from the "F" terminal on the alternator, to the + battery post, and if that dont make it better, go down to your local auto parts store, and have your alternator tested.

i meant to say i dont have a ground wire going to the frame...both trucks have a ground wire from the neg on battery to the engine block but that is all. Not to the frame or body or nething else
