PostPosted: Sat Feb 14, 2004 11:56 pm
Is anybody using a 4.3 in their 2 wheel drive luv? I am planning to put one in my 74 and would like to talk to somone who has done it. Also, I work at a NAPA auto parts store and parts for luvs are difficult to get. I need to find some sources. This is a great site, I look forward to making some freinds. :D

i think a 4.3 would be a good swap. great power, moderately compact, and simple to rig up if you use a carb

The local NAPA usually has pretty fair luck getting parts for me, though I haven't had to buy much lately. There is one guy there that seems to have the knack for finding LUV parts though. For online sources, I like looking through http://www.rockauto.com and usually end up ordering through them as well. They have a wide range, and give the manufacturer and part number for everything. If your local shop can't find the parts, you can look it up at rockauto and come back with a part number for them to just order in for you.

A 4.3 should be about like putting in a small block, only you'll have a bit more room front to back in the engine bay. I think most people end up with a small block simply because its easy to find a 350 sitting around somewhere. 4.3s are a little harder to come by on the cheap, but would make a great swap. I can't think of anyone who has put one in a luv, but I think I've heard of one or two swapped into later Isuzus. I'll see what I can dig up.

I intend to use a 90 s10 4.3 with a turbo 200 tranny. I am going to try to use the s10 fuel injection. Painless wiring is supposed to make a wiring harness for this, I hope it's painless. I want it to be reliable so I want it as stock as possible. Thanks for the great input, I'm really glad I found this site.

a 4.3 has good power. i had a 98 s10 with a 4.3 vortec and it was a strong motor. when i get my 2wd luv i'm gonna do a engine swap and i haven't decided what i want in it. 350, 4.3, or 4.1 buick.

4.3's are tough little motors. I have one in my 1954 Ford F-100 and I have broken 3 motor mounts, 2 tranny mounts, and 2 rear main leaf springs......all with a stock 4.3 with a carb!

Great motors - cheap parts (same as SBC).

I would put the power output in the 305 range....heck mine has out ran more 350's than one could imagine.

i have a 75 luv with a stock (well bored 60 over) 4.3 v6 with a Holy 4 barrel and highrise intake camero 5 speed.
It scats real good.
in my expreince the 4.10(rearend ratio) works better with the 4.3 v6 than the 4.56 (reargears)
it is fairly easy to install i had little problems with the motor mounts took but still it took about 1 day to make.
as for the clutch i ended up
buying the mcLeod hydrolic throwout bearing.
but you should have no problems with engine swap since your going automatic.
as for the cooling the stock luv raditor wont work it ran about 220-260
just driving no playing(too hot 4 me) i had the local
raditor shop put 2 luv raditors together now it wont hard run above 180

What do you mean by put two radiators together? Will I have that problem with a stock motor?

by put together the 2 luv raditors
i mean the local raditor shop took the 2 stock raditors and weilded them where the top raditor hose spicket to the back of the 1st raditor and then done the bottom hose spicket to the bottom of the 1st
so thus the 2 raditors work as one raditor
the man at the raditor shop said caddys done this factory back in the 60
hope you understand better.

That sounds like a good fix. I might just try that myself. Are you using manafolds or headers? :vamp:

stock manafolds off of a monte carlo. the monte carlo was my donor car.
i had to bend the manafolds a little bit but its not too bad
the manafold i got almost look like shortie hearders. they gotta flow decent! :-)

a lot of the guys doing the 4.3 swap into their 4x4 toyotas are using sanderson block hugger headers. supposedly they're pretty low-profile

The engine I have has stock header style manfolds. I intend to keep them for they look like they will fit nicely and give me good flow. : :drinking: peace. :drinking:

I see on http://www.edelbrock.com they have a new intake manifold to use with the newer vortec heads, man I wish they had done it a little sooner so I could have it.

i've heard you can get more horsepower from the stock vortec heads, than you can from porting and polishing older heads.

Vortech Heads flow real good, but, I wouldn't put them past a set of Camel Humps, ported and polsihed. Those Fuelie heads flow damn good. I have no numbers to back this info up but thats my opinion on it anyways.
