Just bought a 78 Luv and engine is LOCKED.. I am planning an original restoration and am in need of a complete, running, original engine for this truck. I know it is an Isuzu engine (1.8 I think) but thats about all I know about LUVs at this point. I am in Texas so the closer the better. I would consider a complete parts truck with good engine if it is nearby and the price is right. HELP

if your doing a compleat resto. why not just rebuild the one you have? i think JC whitney carries rebuild kits for the 1.8

btw: welcome to tha site, grab a beer and pull up a stool. :drinking:

I have to agree with Larp If your gonna do a resto on it just rebuild the one ya got unlees the block is hosed! I have a complete engine.... butIt's in pieces right now I was gonna rebuild it and have a back up engine just in case! I'm in Washington and coming to Texas next week to visit my folks for two weeks And If I was driving my car back there I would have brought it back with me. I'm not sure what year the engine is right off hand or what is.... or what year it goes to I just got it with my truck when I bought it.

I'm afraid there has been too much damage to the block.....looks as though it dropped a valve causing piston to break and scar cylinder wall badly.....It may come out by boring, but I would rather start with a running engine, and if I find one in good enough shape, I may hold off on the rebuild until I address all the other issues with the truck.

Never mind I cant get into the stupid chat room for some reason. Anyway I havent cleaned up my block yet to see how bad off it is or what kind of shape it is in so far from everything I have seen it looks like it is in fairly good shape. I'll look for the engine S/N and see if I can figure out what year LUV it's from and maybe I'f you'd like to buy it from me just make me a decent offer for it and you can have it. I am hoping to do my V-8 swap come early spring.

By the way, I'm not concerned with it being the "correct" engine as far as date codes and such. Just as long as it will bolt in without "major" modifications. I do wish to keep it a 1.8L but year model is unimportant .

Is the engine you have "completely" disassembled or in long or short block state?

Well it is in a state of disarray lol the block still has pistons and crank in it. The head still has everything in it and is not on the block. I was cleaning up the head tonight and taking a look at it to see if it has any problems, none that I can see so far I will pull the valves tomorrow and see what the rest looks like. All other accessories are in my basement under the stairs waiting to be cleaned. lol Anyway I will be cleaning them up soon. I'm just hoping that my engine will hold out til springtime when I go for my V-8 conversion. So where are you in Texas?

Well I don't know how much money you want to spend, but my engine broke a piston at the 250,000 mark. I knew I was going to keep the truck so I checked on rebuilding the engine but the block was ruined by the rod beatting around in the cylinder. I ordered one through Advance Auto store for $1000 with a warranty. The store clerk said it appeared to be a factory rebuilt engine. It seemed alittle high in price considering I only payed $900 for the truck(80 4X4 with AC). It has been a VERY dependable truck.
