Ok guys, I have a chance at getting a buddies 76 or 77 firebird T/A It has a 400 in her my buddy says he will sell it to me for $800.00 That if he doesnt sell it in the next week to anyone. Well anyway I think I might rape her and take the 400 and put it in my Luv and sell the body to recoup my money and maybe a little extra  I have always wanted a firebird but I want a 67 (doesnt everyone) lol anyway I was wondering what everyones take on this was?

you might want to check the width of the 400. if it is the pontiac 400 it is huge..... alot of cutting may be in order.

 I think i'm going to have to go against what the majority are saying and say it's not a good idea. If the engine #'s don't match then rape it. If they do match, hell i'd restore it and have a T/A and a LUV to take to the show. My two cents

start by tracking down the engine code in the VIN, see if it matches what eng is in it. to be sure what the eng is you gotta get the casting #s and either call a GM garage or you may be able to find them here http://www.mortec.com/ or here http://www.teufert.net/identify/identify.htm

Well, I am a pontiac nut ( i own a 69 GTO nad a 97 RA TRANS AM). If the car isn't in too bad of shape I would fix it up. As far as transplanting it into the LUV, the engine really isn't much larger than a chevy, but, it weighs ALOT more. A complete pontiac engine tips the scales at around 650 lbs. Be forewarned, your drive train better be beefed. Those engines can put out mountains of torque. If I was you I would stick with a chevy engine, go for a crate motor or something like that. Trust me, the parts for a chevy are cheaper too. I still love to build a pontiac engine though. I built a bad ass 389 tri power for my brothers 65 GTO. It easily pulls the front wheels!

here is my one penny worth. (i dont have 2 cents to spare  ) i would buy a bargain post or trade a post or whatever you have there for buying/selling cars, parts etc. here in oklahoma i can find a small block chevy, (needs rebuilt of course but i would rebuild any motor before retro-fitting it anyway) for about 250-300 bucks. a good turbo 350 trans for about 400$ and a 10 bolt rear end for 150#(dime a dozen). all in all you will have 850 wrapped up in three components that are easy to work on and find parts for. i dont know pontiac or olds but i know chevy. most everything will interchange on almaost all years. n e way, my one cents worth :D

man, that is typical. why dont they keep more parts in stock? they have a carb kit and a reman carb for a 70 opel gt but not for a chevy luv. it a conspiracy i tell ya. next it'll be dogs and cats livin together, total chaos. my soap box is falling over so i'll go now. later :shocked!:

Anyway guys keep your fingers crossed that he doesnt find another buyer lol. :!:

I definitely have to agree with the comment about the torqueyness :? of that trans am engine....i had a 78 for a short time with that 6.6 and it would pull stumps ....but the whole car including engine was so heavy it wasnt that fast....my luv could dust that thing...If its a 76, and wasnt in bad shape i would probably keep it..that year still had the circular headlights i think and is more unique than the bandit cars...if its a 77 i would send it on its way and make a few dollars to put in my luv!
