Just 2 days ago I noticed that when I put my truck into reverse it makes a sound that I have never heard before and also doesn't shift into 2nd gear every time I press in the clutch. Before these two problems, anywhere I'd drive and eventually shift into 4th gear, the shifter always pops out of 4th gear when you don't manually hold it in place with your hand. So even though I don't have much experience on how to work on any vehicle, I knew right there my transmission was going bad. Most of you guys here at the Diesel Forum who own 81 or 82 LUV diesels, know that the transmissions in these trucks aren't very tough at all. In that being said, I wanted to post this message to ask anybody who wants to sell a 5-speed transmission for a 2WD diesel let me know. I need one in good shape and preferably one with less than 100,000 miles. Before I owned my truck, my dad had it and used it as a work truck. The original transmission lasted to 130,000 miles and then blew, the only working gear being 4th gear. So when my dad gave it to me, we had to buy a transmission to get my truck on the road. When we got a trans, it came out of a LUV with something like 230,000 miles and when we put it in my LUV it lasted for probably at least 50,000 miles. I have a 1982 LUV 2WD and if anybody can help me, please reply. I appreciate it.

i've had that transmission apart 3 times. The 'ol Isuzu MSG5T. Definatley NOT durable. Good luck finding one, last time i checked they were around $200.00 or so from the salvageyard, and it had to be shipped in around here, from the east coast or something. And a rebuilt one is around $1500.00 or so. I'm not sure what to tell ya, other than that if you can go with another tranny, like a 4 speed or something, i would do that.

Well, now my transmission is back to normal and works good and it is actually fun to drive my truck without the problems I was having. But, I'm sure the trans will start to become worse anyways. If there is anybody that wants to sell a 5-speed transmission for a 2.2 diesel, please let me know. Not only that, if you know a junkyard that is close by where you live and they have any diesel trucks, I am very interested in the transmissions that are in them. Because around where I live, there are no diesel LUVs or PUPs in my local junkyards, only gas. I appreciate anyone's help.

they're probably the same tranny, but the ones in the '82-85 diesel s10 and most older isuzu diesel p'ups use exact same diesel engine, so the transmission should bolt right up

what about rebuilding your tranny? popping out of gear sounds like worn synchronizers. a rebuild kit includes synchronizers. i found a rebuild kit for $145 http://www.drivetrain.com/isuzuMSG_MUA5sp.html

I have thought about rebuilding it, but I wanted to buy a whole trans just to install faster. But a rebuild kit for the trans for $145 is not bad at all! Thanks a lot for the website and the help, I appreciate it. I may just buy the kit instead of getting a whole other transmission.

Well I can tell you that 5th gear is weak in these 5speeds behind the diesel. The cause is a snap ring that holds 5th gear in place and the groove that holds the snap ring becomes worn. I know a guy in Arkansas who specilizes in these transmissions. He does really good work and is know around the state well. Also remeber that these transmissions run 30 weight oil only and remember to keep a check on them, they do not hold much oil so it is easy to run one low and burn it up.

the transmission in the gasoline luvs uses 30w too. well 30w or 40w depending on your climate. i'm running 40w since its so hot down here.

yep, 30 WT motor oil.

A Lot of vehicles use it for tranny lube.

Honda, Ford, Chevy.

Nowdays mostly everything uses ATF.

Well, I am going to be taking out my currently no good transmission in my truck pretty soon. I had a question though, the original trans to the truck blew at 130,000 miles when my dad owned it. It blew on him on the highway and he only had 4th gear. Since the truck doesn't have 1,2,3,5, and Reverse, I wanted to ask what rebuild parts will be needed to rebuild this transmission? It only has one gear, but I think it would be an easy fix and money will need to be spent. I still have a lot to learn about transmissions and the internals, so this is why I'm asking for anybody's opinion on what it will need.

Sorry, the gas transmission will not work on the diesel engine. Unfortunately, the gas transmission will not bolt up to the diesel and has the starter mounted on the opposite side. The Isuzu transmissions do not have removeable bellhousings and that is a main reason why the gas transmission won't be the same as the diesel transmission. I appreciate your help. I am looking for two transmissions actually. I am in much interest for a 4-speed diesel transmission for a 2WD diesel truck and a 5-speed diesel transmission for a 4WD truck. If anybody can help with what I listed above, I appreciate your reply.
