I definetly see both sides of the story here. A 2bolt will hold up just fin in a car and such but when your doing alot of low RPM lugging of the motor is where i see the extra mains being a good thing, hence why they whent into trucks.

I'm not too worried about 2 or 4, not making a monster, well maybe a little one  . Whatever comes up and is a good deal is what I'm going with for mine.

I blew a 4 bolt main engine. When #4 main cap let go, at about 8000 rpm, it completely shelled the motor. The only thing usable was the air cleaner top cover, and the passenger valve cover. There were pushrods sticking out of the carb. Grade 8 bolts are strong, but they will break. when you break a 4 bolt main block, they break big like I have been saying.

i can understand why you would think that four bolts would be better than two, but from a guy who has a 750 horse 406, he said that two bolt mains have more webbing in the block for the bolts to hold on to. why would the front and the back mains be two bolt even on a four bolt?

Who gives a shit? If you want a four bolt get a four bolt. If you want a two bolt get a 2 bolt. I like four bolt mains. Is this gonna go on?

Four bolt front and rear caps would need different a different oil pan setup.

I wouldnt worry about having a 2 bolt vs 4 bolt main unless you are pushing more than 450hp or squeezing heavily. I have confidence in the General.

the only time i ve ever seen mains break was because the rods broke first. and got lodged against the block then taking out the mains. i haven`t had problems with either one. hey i`m still running a stock cast crank but that`s another topic.

I can only say that there has to be some sort of formula that you can run that determines the number of bolts.

I mean if your pulling, my Van has SIX. So it depends on the app.

Then again, it's 1:30 am, so my brain don't care.

If the main bolts are holding the crank in place, the more bolts you have, the firmer the crank is held, so would you be stopping the crank from bouncing or flexing as much inside the engine with more bolts? I can't see the added metal fatigue being greater with the extra bolt holes, that being said, splayed bolts are superior to straight bolts as they don't allow straight fracture lines through the metal. Chevy switched to four bolt mains for all of its hi-po motors in the 60's, if they did it, they did it for a reason.

for all you guys that want to spend more money for a four bolt, the Only reason you would need a four bolt is if you are going to turn over 6500 rpm for a log period. when I say a long period I mean staying over 6500 rpms for more than fifteen minutes at a time. I ran a machine shop and we did alot of testing on this matter. I have a 406 on nitrous that is putting out over 800 hp and it is just a 2 bolt. so if any one has 2 bolt 400 sbc that they do not want let know and i will ye your 2bolt.
