The upper & lower control arm ball joints on the front of my 80 LUV have torn rubber boots. Keep 'em greased and everything is ok, but I wondered if there was one, maybe a Trooper f'instance, that would fit and didn't have the rubber boot. I've been contemplating getting the whole front end steering rebuilt so my LUV wouldn't try to wander.

I will leave that to the powers that know.

But if you did want to do a conversion, there is an article in the information section that shows you how to do it.

all ball joints have rubber boots, they have to, to keep the dirt out. you could make some new ones out of a bicycle innertube and some wire(electric fence wire). you would have to take the nut off the ball joint and get it out of the spindle. then take the old boot off. cut a 2 or 2 1/2 in. piece of the innertube out and slip it over the shaft of the ball joint. slip it over the ridge where the old boot was held in and take a piece of wire and rap it around the tube were the boot is and twist the wire until it tightens up. bunch it up so you have plenty of excess to let the ball joint move around without stretching the tube. then take a piece of wire and rap around the top of the tube and bunch it up so it fights tightly around the shaft. and tighten the wire up. now regrease them. it may not be the best but better than buying new ball joints.

Those nuts are a bitch to get out, pardon my french. But I have to see about jerking them out of my 73 for Noyz when the temperature is not below 18. Colder than well, cold out.

Thanx, fellas. I was hoping to hear there was some after market or some replacement ball joint available that would fit and didn't have the rubber boot. A lot of ball joints just have a rubber seal. The previous owner of my LUV did a lot of off roading. The top side of the skid plate was packed full of hardened mud. This old fart ain't gonna tear it down just to put a new boot in. And I hear that those split replacement boots you can get like's used on CV joints don't stick together on the seam.
