ok so when im driving and trucks in gear it makes a whining noise. When i push the clutch in it stops. So I guess that something in the tranny is going. Also its hard to shift...i know the clutch is fine and i tried adjusting it to get it to shift better but with no luck. My question really is, is it the tranny, or could it be driveshaft/differential? When you push the clutch in does the driveshaft stop or keep going??? Dumb question really but I dont wanna stick my head out the door and look while im driving....

check fluid level in the tranny. A little bit of whine is to be expected but it shouldnt be realy loud. When you push in the clutch the driveshaft and diferental keep spinning the speed the truck is moving, this also includeds parts of the tranny as well. I would top off your tranny, or possibly change the fluid all together. Just remeber to use 30wieght motor oil.

i agree, sounds like tranny problems, could also be the pilot bearing. i have also heard of rear ends whinning only when under a load, and not while coasting. a good place to start is to top off the tranny fluid, maybe even change it, that way you can look for metal flakes :( since the tranny takes 30w motor oil its cheap to change, if i remember right mine took either a little over 2 or 3 quarts.

could it be the universal joints in the driveshaft when its under load? te ones in my dads car went, it made wierd sounds when you were crusing but if you took your foot off the gas it stopped

Generally universal joints are clunks and knocks. Sounds like the pilot bearing is on its way. They tend to make a whining sounds. But yes take these guys advice and change the tranny fluid, if it don't fix it (probably not) it won't hurt nothing anyways...good luck

it could be the syncros in the trannie. they are what make it shift into gear, so if you have touble shifting, than that could be a problem. also when you go to shift in to too low of a gear when you are going to fast, and it makes a whining sound, so that could explain the whining sound.

maybe i didnt say it right.....when im letting off the gas and just coasting is when i hear the whine. When i push on the gas and it is "under load" the whine goes away...or at least it significantly decreases. I was thinking the syncros are going because its hard to shift into gear no matter what but could that be the whining sound? What im trying to do is decide if its the tranny or something else...if its the tranny i have one lined up for a replacement...but even so, does anybody know where to find a rebuild kit for the luv trannies?

I would put the pilot bearing in the "probably not it" file if the noise happens with the clutch pedal out. The trans shaft and the motor should be spinning together and therefore no turning going on in the pilot bearing.

I'm thinking its the tranny because of the difficult shifting along with a noise. If it is really coming up from the tranny you can usually cup your hand around or over the shifter knob and kind of amplify the noise. The rear end wouldn't telegraph the noise up the shifter much at all. If it is the rear they usually make more of a lower groan that you almost feel as much as hear. Both of the rear ends I've had go out made almost no noise cruising or under load, but take your foot off the gas and they sounded off like I was dragging a body underneath or something.

Now the clutch could cause difficult shifts as well, not enough disengage and it makes shifting a bear. You can spot this pretty easy though. Push in the clutch with the tranny in neutral (sitting still) and up the RPMs a bit. Then gently try to put it in reverse. If it grinds, the clutch isn't letting go enough and needs adjusted. That means the tranny is still spinning some even with the clutch pushed in.

My 77 has made quite a bit of tranny whine since I put it together (~15 years and ~100K miles ago) and the shift to 3rd is a little tough. The noise is loudest when slowing down, clutch out, foot off the gas, and its worse in 3rd than any other gear. You can hear a lot of noise come up through the shifter, especially if you cup your hand around it in different ways. After a 100,000+ miles it hasn't really gotten any worse. I think basically the syncros took a beating from the prior owner of the motor and tranny, but by keeping the fluid changes up and topping off the tranny often I've kept it from going any further.
