well i screwed up a tach on my luv by barely reading instructions i hooked the wire that supposed to go to the coil but put on the resistor  i didnt know i just looked at the picture barely thought it was where it went boy it fried the tack it went backwards kinda funny lol so dont hook up to white resistor on top of coil and also for hooking up the light on one be careful where you connect too i blew out a couple fuses  get a test light and check they come in hand

their is only 4 wires at least on mine

I believe it is white one for ground, black to coil, green one for light at night and red for constant power

but just read the instructions if you have any

hope this helped

A tach is usually 4 wires and they aren't too complicated. Sunpro tachs are set up like the following, and I assume most others will be similar:

Red: constant +12 volts with key on
Black: ground
Blue or White: Connect to dash lights for the guage backlighting
Green: Tach signal from electronic ignition, or connect to negative side of the coil on older cars (like stock LUVs)

You'll also usually have some kind of setting for 4, 6, or 8 cylinders to set on the tach. Like jk said, read the instructions or look at the tach for a wiring diagram.

Just read, re-read, and then read the instructions again. I hate it when people start chopping wires and just hooking stuff up till it works. It makes it that much harder for the next guy.
