it could be done if the timing chain has a master link. the problem is, the crankshaft goes through the timing chain cover so if there is no master link then it is impossible to get the chain around the crankshaft without removing the cover. i think i'd check the chain tensioner and make sure its good. but i still think the cover has to come off to do that. pulling the motor is probably the easiest way, the pan has to come off to get the chain cover off. and to get the pan off on a 4x4 you have to remove the front axle. either way its a pain in the @$$. but i'd say pulling the whole motor is easier.

i definetly agree, it could probly be done whith the motor in but i think its worth the effort borowing a chery picker or something to pull the motor.

It is a rope and pulley setup. At one end you have a 3 pulley setup, the other end has a 2 pulley setup. The rope is wound through the pulley in such a way that when you pull one end of it, the pulley sets are drawn toward each other, with little or no effort.

clicky the linky

You could do it if you wanted to bust yer knuckles. I did it on my 77 years back, but had to take all the front end stuff out so I could do it. I did it again on my 81.
