the smog pump is the air pump, right?
i would say if your state doesnt require smog checks to just remove it all together

It has been my experience that you can lasso it around the fan blades and put it on. You just have to back up and think overly mechanically how to interweave it. It is more of a challenge than anything else, but I had to take the alternator belt off then do the lasso around the fan belt in between the spokes.

Even if it is not required, it is a good idea to keep it in a working condition. Most of the counties in the US will be going to checking emissions by 2010.

I have an aftermarket catalytic converter on it. Does that do away with the smog/air pump?

Your still gonna have to run the smog pump. The whole purpose of that is to pump the air back into the system to reduce the emissions down to a level which the catalytic can handle, if the smog pump is not doing it's job (albiet if you leave it not running you tend to have an engine that runs better in my honest opinion) you are likely to not pass.

One of the first things I do in the boneyard after lighting my cigar is to check to see if there is a smog pump in the junque. THen it becomes part of my spare parts collection.

when I got my truck waaaaay back when.....it already had the smog pump removed.
your truck may not have to be smog checked.....I would check into that before removing it.

No wonder I choke when I breathe air here in NC. Your running around without a smog pump! 8O

The lack of a smog pump is not necessarily a bad thing. If the tight a$$ politicians say that you have to have it, then more than likely your gonna have to keep it.

Sure - they are called Mustangs.

And actually, a cow fart releases the same amount of ozone that a car does running an hour.
