Without the CV axle the differential and hub have an open hole, lube can get out, contamination can get in. A CV will be nearly impossible to find, as will anything you may ruin driving it without the differential & hub sealed. '79 was the first year for 4x4 LUVs, it could have had a '77 body mated to a later 4x4 frame/drivetrain and then registered as a '77 since all the ID numbers are on the body. You need to know the year of the frame/drivetrain when buying replacement parts, there were a few differences between model years.
