I have a 79 chevy luv I picked up about 3.5 years ago and I drove it for awhile, the fuel pump went out and it sat for the last 2.5 years. I've recently got a new pump and got it running again, but forgot the gears for my 4x4. There is no knob on it, it's just one that the guy before me slapped on there and it's a normal shifter knob. I was curious if anyone has a picture of the actualy gears, or how I can find my gears? I can only currently find two, though I haven't messed with it too much. One up, neutral, and one to the right and down I believe. I'm not quiet too sure if everything in it is stock, the wiring is a freaking disaster like every LUV I've had. I believe that when I was 4 by'ing a few years back, the gear that was forward would pop out of gear back down into neutral if I went over small pot holes, etc. I believe when I first bought it that the seller said I need to cut out a larger whole in the floor board in order to be able to fully use the 4 by. Possible was an addon, or something never lined up right when he replaced the tranny or something. I'm not sure if the motor and tranny in it is even from a 79, but getting an idea of where the gears would be would help! I haven't driven it more than a couple of times around the block to make sure wiring and everything was working fine, does the 4x need to stay in neutral, or 2hi while driving on the road? I've been heard some noise from my front right suspension I believe, somewhat of a squeaking, as if something didn't have fluid or my suspension was shot. I have never heard this before even on my recent 3 round block trips during testing. It almost sounds like a metal on metal squeak, the ride isn't smooth but I've owned 3 LUV's and all of them haven't been a very smooth ride. Any suggestions help! I'm not new to this forum, but I am new to posting... I got my first LUV when I was 17, I have two now. I'm based out of Parkland, WA if anyone wants to come take a look and help me out! Thanks

Not sure if your looking for the transmission shift pattern or the transfer case pattern, please clarify. As far as popping out of gear I assume it's your transfer case. If a body lift was done then you would need to trim the hole. There is also a spring that breaks causing the transfer case to pop out of gear, you need to look at a service manual to see where it is.

Here is a standard shift pattern for the transmission, someone with a 4X will have to post a transfer case shift pattern

Transfer case knob, and yes I believe a 3 inch lift was put in. Thanks for the info! It's been way too long since I've messed with any LUV, I feel like I'm brand new to them again and it's make me frustrated. I loved them because I knew if anything happened I could fix just about anything on the side of the road, but now I've lost my touch. :\

the transfer case is kinda weird. if you're in 2hi you're all the way to the right and down. to go to 4hi, push up and to the left. to go to 4lo, just push down from 4 hi. kinda like an upside down "U". I don't have a picture but hopefully i explained it good enough
