Good morning fellow LUV -ers...
I've had my '78 for several years and am finally getting around to seeing what is missing with the spare tire mount. I'm tired of laying the spare in the bed!
I took the mechanism out from under the truck, and it seems mechanically sound. It rotates and "clicks" when rotated.
What is missing is the chain or cable that raises or lowers the tire, and whatever attachment goes at the end of that chain or cable to grab the spare tire.
Any suggestions as to what this looks like, how you reingage the chain or cable inside the mechanism, and where to find one would be appreciated.
Thanks.
M

estepp.....I had my hoist go bad a few years ago and it seems that I had to disassemble it to get it fixed. It wasn't too hard and before I re-installed it, I greased it up well. I was surprised and pleased that I was able to repair it rather than search for a new one. I think the parts missing for you are the chain--which is sort of a long link type, and a flat 1/8 by 2" by about 4" long flat bar that fits into the center hole of the rim. The stock ones have been 'pressed' into sort of a trapezoidal shape so that the thing self-centers into the rim hole. I guess you could 'pound' one out with a big sledge. The end of the chain is attached to this. You also have to have the +- 42" rod that is the handle for raising and lowering the tire. It is designed to be stored behind the seat back.

Thanks. Those chains exist anymore? If you have a chance a pic could help.
No rush... I've waited this long to fix it!

Luvrv8,
Do you still have a tire hoist unit you are willing to sell?
Thanks

Pretty sure I do, I will check after the Nationwide race.

EDIT:

Does this look correct, pretty sure this was out of a 78.

That's great. How do you wish to settle up? I can mail a check if you wish.

Not sure if it would work, but almost all full size trucks used this type of setup. At least the Chevrolet and GMC did. But you have a Luv one coming.

Just a FYI for anybody. It should be cheap to buy one at the "junk yard"

Grandmaster of the "Shade Tree" way.. I can't see the yard for all the cars. Come on down and we will sit on the porch and watch the grass grow.
