Well, this is the first time my luv has not whanted to start for me :(
It was -11*F over night and it warmed up to a short sleve high of 1*F. Well i got in my luv and tryed to start it. I had to crank it so much, and when it finally cought it sounded like it was only hitting on 2 cylinders. Well i sat in the cold for a good 5min. whith the pedal held so it was idling at 2000rpm. Then i let it idle for 15min and the temp gage was still not even reading. Man i hope this cold stuff passes soon, but for now at least it has a slightly warmer place in the shop. :)

I know what you mean. Last winter, my luv cranked so slow on cold days, I thought it would never start.

Mine cranks very slowly after sitting all night in hte cold (temps in the teens or colder). I have a new battery, not a huge one, but a good one. I have a new starter and new cables. I just chalk it up to another luv eccentricity.

yeah mine runs fine and everything its just getting it to catch is slow. But it has never not started on me. As far as choke goes its an electric choke on a 380cfm webber.

I can't imagine having temp that low! I'd have to hibernate or fly south.
Cold and I don't mix well. :D

This is for the people in the cold! You will need the largest battery you can get. This refers to the cold cranking amps. Most people don't realize that a 4 cyl. engine has to turn over almost twice as fast as a V-8. The reason is the firing impulse is so far apart. This takes a higher amp battery, esp. in the cold weather. I live in N.C. and I run atleast 800 CCA. Also I hope you don't have those pesky( CHEAP!) replacable battery ends. Those are nothing but trouble. If you can goto NAPA and get the largest cables you can. Check out the size of the cables for a six volt car. Good luck!

how good are your cables? Clean , tight and the connection to the starter , and don't forget the ground connection for the battery. It should be grounded to the battery tray and the engine block.

the cables were replaced last summer wheren i rebuilt the motor. The battery if anything is the culprit, its just a parts store one that they recomend for the truck. I think its only 700cca. Im probly going to put the dry cell from my ford into my luv, 1000cca at 32* and 800cca at 0* :D

The cables are 0 gauge, swaged ends and are as short as possible. I have a ground for the tray, and to the block. Also one from the block back to the frame. My truck is just tempermental.

My current luv starts just fine in cold weather. She just dosn't like to idle. But this reminded me of something that happened with my first Luv. I was about 19 living with my sister and her husband. He and I worked at the same factory. The weather was right around the 0 mark. He decided that we'd take his new mustang to work since my Luv was rusty, and had air for floor boards. 8O 8O He went out to start it and after cranking it 5 or 6 times killed his battery. :x :x So he comes back inside and tells me we can't go to work the car won't start. :( :( Then I decided to try the old Luv. He looks at me and says if his brand new mustang didn't start that theirs no way my old Luv would. :? :? But I decide to try anyway. I go out to my truck get in and turn the key. She cranked over slowly. I hit the gas a couple of times, and try again. She fired right up. To the dismay of my brother in law    we drove my rusty old flintstone mobile to work while his brand new mustang was on a charger back at the house.

I think it is because Isuzu, even though they had odd quirks made a damn good engine.

One of the things that I recommend is an inline Antifreeze heater that I had on my 81. If it got to 10 in New York, I plugged it in, and the truck started consistenly every time. It only takes a little electric, but I got to work.

On the little 4 Banger? That is amazing. How havy is the gritter? Would seem that it would grunt when it's on...
