Hi,

Tomorrow I am taking possession of a 1981 Isuzu PUP, 4x4.

I see the "Sticker MPG" for the LUV was listed at 35 MPG for the CA model. Best I ever got, with a rebuilt/ tuned engine and carb was 23 MPG. The "Sticker" for the 81 PUP 4x4 is around 30 MPG, I was hoping to get close to it, but, well...

I want to convert the PUP to a 5 speed, as it has the same 4 speed trans in it as the LUV, and I assume, a bigger engine? (2.0 instead of 1.8)

I was going to do a 5 speed swap on my 4x4 LUV, but it ended up getting put by the wayside because of CA emissions.

I have heard no V6 5 speeds will bolt to the G180/200's, is that true? What should I look for when finding a 5 speed manual from a Trooper? There are a few at the junkyard near me.

-You'll never see 30mpg from a 4x4 gas truck in real world driving. The mileage estimates were formulated using the absolute most economical driving methods with a 55mph speed limit using fuel with oxygenators since banned & no ethanol.
-Same 1.8L G180Z engine in both trucks.
-Only 4cyl trannies fit 4cyl engines, v6 bellhousing bolt patterns are different.
-Look for a cable clutch 4x4 MSG 5sp bolted to the 2.3L 4ZD1 gas engine, they came in only '86 & '87 pickups & Troopers.

Alright, so look for a 4 cylinder and a cable clutch.

I have a 4x4 5spd conversion and 60mph is 2820 rpm vs 2880 rpm with the 4spd. I get max 23 mpg combined, usually closer to 20.

Don't waste your money.
