glad to meet "the truck" today. He got a good deal on a reliable 4 speed tranny and transfer case complete. Also hooked him up with some good spare parts.

Thanks Tire_Juice for the good deal!!! I have the engine out right now to replace the oil pan gasket and main seal since I had the tranny out. Also going to put my Offy intake, weber carb, pertronix ignitor and header on it from off my other luv.So if I get all my gaskets in I should have it on the road by the end of this week :ebiggrin. Can't wait to be out plowing though the drifts.

Take the front wheels off and get the front as low as you can, and you should be able to install the engine and trans as a unit. I never could get my cherry picker to raise the stock engine high enough when I was taking it out.

Not unless you cut the tranny support crossmember out & then replace it after the engine & tranny are positioned. The 4x4 oil pan sump won't clear the front drive axle assembly sliding either straight forwards or back, so even with the crossmember removed the unit would have to go in with the tranny pointed down at a steep angle.
Normal installation is with the engine in place, then the tranny tailshaft has to stuff between the crossmember & tunnel far enough to allow the input shaft to clear the clutch as the front is raised, then slide forwards to mate to the engine. Remember the tranny needs to rotate 90 degrees as it is slid into the final position. Since your truck is 4x4 the t-case makes this even more of a tight fit, so remember the t-case outer half will unbolt from the side of the tranny if need be.

I do have the cross-member cut out as I took the tranny out first and them decided to pull the engine to replace the main seal and oil pan gasket. So I was thinking if the oil pan would clear the front axle with the tranny attached it would be alot easier to get it all lined up and bolted together and then install them as a unit.

I have used an adjustable hoist tree that lets me change the pitch in 180* or less positions. like I said in the last 6 months I have went solo on the tear down and breakdown of each individual part of my 79 LUV and no matter what, you will always be able to improve your LUV truck to your liking. Even if its not a stockish fix, you are the artist that is painting this picture,,,

If you're referring to a "load leveler", I have to agree. I'd never have gotten my engine and transmission back into the truck as a unit without an adjustable load leveler.

A couple things to check: Make sure coil polarity is correct, + to ignition switch, - to the distributor. #2 defective condenser? #3 Make sure timing mark is advancing up the scale with rpm increase. Do this with the vacuum advance hose disconnected. My thoughts.
