 Post subject: 79 80 4x4 Tranny Same?
PostPosted: Mon Dec 29, 2003 1:39 am
I just need to know would a 1980 4x4 luv tranny fit in a 79 4x4 luv? Also, wondering if theres a five speed somewhere that would fit the stock 1.8l engine? I think this may have been covered in previous post somewhere? Anybody know?

well contrary to popular beiliefe i dont think that the isuzu 5speed will fit the 1.8L. The MUA 5 has a completely diferent bolt patern, this is one big reason why you dont see 5speed 1.8L and 1.9L troopers. There might be an adapter out there somewhere though. As far as LUV trannies, 78-80 should be the same. Good luck :D

actually there is a little bit of differance, i did a swap earlier this year the 80 motor and tranny fit in alittle bit different on a 79 and vice versa, the 80 driveline wont fit into the 79 tranny but the 79 driveline will fit into the 80........................this is just what i went through when i swapped mine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

is it the slip yoke spline count? Becouse i know my 80 has about a 24spline slip yoke and my 78 had a 17 or something around there.

Search for my other posts...I don't remember the tranny number right now but the right 4x4 5spd tranny from a trooper will bolt directly to the LUV motor.

I have the tranny in my garage and am getting ready to cut my frame to make room for the extra length.

hummm thats odd. I had heard (when i asked a simmilar question on another board) that the 5speed 4x4 tranny out of a trooper (Isuzu MUA5) would not bolt up to the 1.8L motors. I might have to investigate this when i have my trooper tore down... :?

Not the MUA5....it's the MSG-5ET that bolt to the block. But it is 4" or so longer than the 4-spd LUV tranny.

I've been working on getting this one figured out. My working theory is that the motor switch (to 2.6L FI) in mid-87 troopers included a trans switch as well. The only monkey wrench in that theory is the fairly large number of 2.6L to 2.3L block swaps I've heard of with no mention of problems mating to the trans that shipped behind the 2.6L.

The couple of pictures I've seen on the 88+ trans (aka MSG-5F, I think MUA5 is a family name shared by both) it looks like the starter is on the let (from seat) side of the motor. That might be part of the problem right there.

General feeling right now is go for an 84-86 trooper five speed for the best chance of it fitting.
