You have to lock the tensioner away from the chain to allow enough slack to remove or install the cam gear, check to see that the lock hasn't been bumped and released the tensioner so that it is tensioning the chain. Another possibility is that the chain wasn't kept attached to the cam gear while the gear was off the cam, if that's the case you now have the wrong number of chain links between the reference marks on the crank & cam gears, re-index the cam gear to the correct location on the chain & it should be good. This is assuming you didn't rotate the crank any while the chain was off the cam.
