 Post subject: chain tensioner to tight

I am in the middle of a head gasket job and have done everything to the letter and the chain is so tight i connot get the cam gear back on the cam. any suggestions. i need the truck back together exstreamly soon.

You have to lock the tensioner away from the chain to allow enough slack to remove or install the cam gear, check to see that the lock hasn't been bumped and released the tensioner so that it is tensioning the chain.
Another possibility is that the chain wasn't kept attached to the cam gear while the gear was off the cam, if that's the case you now have the wrong number of chain links between the reference marks on the crank & cam gears, re-index the cam gear to the correct location on the chain & it should be good. This is assuming you didn't rotate the crank any while the chain was off the cam.

how do you lock the tentoner away from the chain? this was non stated in any artical i read about replacing the head gasket

This info would be in any manual, even a Haynes/Chilton's. I suggest you purchase one, the Factory Service Manual is preferred.

thanks!!! we got it on though it still was a hassle. the tentioner hit the head of the screw so it would not unlatch all the way but its back on!
