What internally regulated alternator will fit in the stock bracket on a 79? Looking to save the hassle of going through the parts store inventory to find one that will fit.

Did stock 79 4x4's come with any type of positive traction rear end?

Thanks everyone

I had a Nissan 60amp that fit, I have heard Nissan pulsar also, look into it on the forum

Looks stock from this angle but not enough details to tell. Need a pic closer to it, and best shot would be of it from one end with one of the tires pulled off. If it has drum brakes though it is likely the stocker.

Get it on dry pavement and try to turn a full circle as tight as you can. If one tire is skipping some then someone probably welded it.

Another way to tell is to jack up both rear tires so they can spin freely. Turn one tire and see which way the other one turns. If they both roll the same way (like forwards or backwards) then the rear is either welded, locked, or has some limited slip differential.

Isuzu Impulse cars had a LSD in them that would fit into a LUV rear, and lock rite made a locker for it at one time. (That lockrite would click loudly in the tight circle turn test above)

I had to pull one drum today, it started leaking fluid. What was left of the dust shield was crunchy so I ordered a re-build kit for it. Size was 3/4, match for a Stock LUV brake part. I remember the guy I bought it from said he had put $900 into the rear end 8O , (thought he was blowing smoke, who puts $900 into a rear end on a LUV besides that's what I a paid for it) new brakes pads and springs (obviously nothing done to the piston), and other work, I just thought the other work was just seals and what not. He is a diesel mechanic, so not sure what he did but I'll try the turn test after I fix the brakes tomorrow. re-did the picture above.

You can still get the whole slave cylinders for a really reasonable price. I replaced both my rear cylinders rather than rebuilding them.

I probably should have asked about the whole cylinder first, but the kit is only $8.00 at O Reilly.

Thanks for the info Jack :D

Any other suggestions on Internally regulated alternators that may fit?

No way the whole cylinder would have been close to the price you paid for the rebuild kits. I think it was more like $25-$30 each. I went that route because I was afraid the cylinder walls might be scored.

As for the alternator, I've seen a lot of remanufactured ones on eBay in the past. I was looking for the diesel alternator, and it seemed like the gas ones were plentiful. THIS ONE is listed for the Isuzu P'up with the G180 engine. It does not list the LUV, but would it work?

And THIS ONE is listed for the LUV, and is quite a bit cheaper.

Good finds on the alternators Jack, unfortunately I rewired the entire LUV and have a setup for a single wire alternator, currently (no pun intended  ) I'm running the original one as a pulley for the water pump, and have a single wire alternator in place of the smog pump running off the water pump pulley. It's kinda jury rigged to work but I would like to clear the space for a future power steering option.

Luckily my cylinders are in good shape, brake dust was gooped inside, they cleaned up really nice and sealed up tight, probably could have put it back together and been o.k. but without the dust shield it would be pointless.

Thanks Again I appreciate the effort.

Finished the re-build on the cylinders and the brakes work much better. I spun the one tire while it was on the jack stands and the other tire turned in the opposite direction, so welded axle is out. Odd thing was I had it in first gear and the tires spun without the drive shaft spinning, but it did move a tiny bit. So either a locker or limited slip.

That sounds perfectly normal for a standard diff to me.

I agree. That sounds like a standard open diff to me too. On a non-LSD or locked rear end when you first start to get tires spinning you may get both to spin for a short time, then one will just take over all the power.

It looks like the stock axle to me. The pad over the spring mount u-bolts is just like a stock 4x4 LUV. Sounds like it hasn't been modified either.

Probably is stock, I was going to shoot a brief video clip, as luck would have it my radiator gave up. Took it to a shop and they soaked it, flushed it, but it is to crudded up to rod out :( no charge for the attempt at fixing it. They told me to hang on to it and if I found one bring it in and they would check it out.

Went to Prescott to get the radiator out of the 4x4 LUV there, They SMASHED the whole truck.

So anybody got a spare radiator? Found one on ebay as a last resort, figured I'd ask here first.

Thanks

I hope this works.................

I finally made a video clip, been waiting for some rain, I think it's some kind of Limited Slip. Drivers side is not quite as aggressive as the Passenger side, but it does try to "help" in the mud.

Looks like you click on the pic and it redirects to Photobucket.
