Hey Savage....you gotta tell us more. Automatic, stick?.......what's the rpm of the engine just before it 'quits'? Has it been tuned up recently? Does it run good? Is the engine cold or hot when this happens? Does it quit when you increase the rpms then put it into gear?

Yep, gonna need a bit more information about the truck.

If it is a stick then that would be an odd one. There is something called the coasting richer solenoid on the carb that is controlled in part by a switch on the tranny that is active when the trans is in 3rd or 4th. Does it happen just shifting into gear with the clutch pressed and if so which gear, or is it all?

When you say it turns off, is it like the key was turned off, or does it sputter for a bit and die? Also can you get it to try to stay running a bit longer by pumping the gas a bit?

Happy to help, but we just need more info.

He posted multiple threads and I approved the wrong one. The other had a little more information. It is an automatic transmission. He said it idles ok but when you put it in drive it goes dead.

Sorry.

"Please help" etc. should be BANNED as a Subject line anyway. If someone wants help, the Subject line should briefly tell WHAT he wants help with. Without knowing the symptoms better, I'd say something like "'76 LUV quits when put in gear" for the Subject line.

My $.02.

My first guess is a possible locked up torque converter. Again this is a guess, does it try to move then die? If you jack up the rear end and put it on stands try to put it in gear without brakes on and see if it runs and the rear wheels spin.

Agree with others on here, need more information. My first guess would be it idles in neutral ok but dies when he puts it in drive. May be something as simple as the idle speed just adjusted too slow. They all just had the turbo hydramatic 200 back then and no lock up converter.

I am not saying it has a lock up converter, I am guessing the converter is locked up as in frozen inside, seized.

That just keeps the starter from engaging when the transmission isn't in Park or Neutral. Wouldn't cause it to go dead.

maybe the idle is set too low, or the choke is set too closed.
