I ran the wire from the battery to the positive side of coil and smoke came from the distributor.

Thats because the points were closed. you rteally need to get a manual or get someone there that knows what they are doing. I am thinking this is above your mechanical ability.

There has to be a condenser

Agree, you have to have a condenser. It is hard to see because it is mounted at the side of the vacuum advance unit and is easy to miss. Also--make sure the distributor is turning when you crank it over.

Luvrv8 u r probably right. The challenge of learning could be a little more than I can handle, so I will just pay a mechanic to do the job for me. Naaaaaah, not gonna happen. In my defense, nothing was said about the points having to be open when you attach the hot wire from positive to positive, but now I know. I will check the distributor tmrw and see about a condensor. Thanks to all for your input.

What you are doing is basic auto mechanics 101. No one should have told you to check the points position. Again basic mechanics tell you not to leave power to the coil with out the engine turning. I have seen many cars with melted wire looms doing this. All I am saying I's to get help with learning the basics. You can't get everything you need from a computer screen. I am a pilot, I fly many differant planes, when I get into a plane I don't have time in, I get a pilot that does to help me fine tune my basic skills of flying to the new plane. Your attitude of not wanting to get help from someone in the know will soon turn into a classified ad.
