He guys I was just wondering if its a good idea to take my long bed frame out from under the truck and put a short bed s10 frame under it (I want a short bed not long) I would get the 5 lug bolt patter and better suspension

But I don't know if you guys know if there would be problems let me know

Better suspension for what? If drag racing, then it is a step down, plus, the LUV frame is stronger as it is boxed....

More work then it's worth. We have many members who have no issue with the stock system. Many of us have 5 lug with the stock suspension.

There are lots of 6 lug wheel options now. You can get just about any style wheel in 6 lug that you can in 5 lug nowadays.

That is a pretty big job just to have wheel options, do you have the fab skills to do this?

So what are you going to do about the length and width differences?

like what? there isnt much you will need to put on, you can probably use s10 coils. with the amount of fab work and time it will take to swap frames you could easily swap the luv chassis to 4 wheel coilovers and a 4 linked rear.

You asked and many of us old time LUV owners gave you a answer. No it is not a good idea to swap frames. Measurements are not close, the LUV has a stronger frame, the LUV suspension handles fine. You got answers from guys with V8's, V6's and a drag truck. Now you come back and tell us we are wrong, you just pissed off about 40 years of LUV experience between 4 owners ( i am sure the years is much higher) do what you want it's your truck. If you come here and ask opinions don't try to challenge and discard them, remember you asked.

Just wanted to chime in my 25 years of LUV experience here too. The LUV frame is fully boxed, a solid square tube, not an open C shape like the S10. I'd say strength wise the LUV would be near twice as strong if not more. I'd also ask better suspension in what way? The stock torsion bar front suspension on a LUV handles quite nicely for a small truck. The rear end could use a little work to help traction and wheel hop if you really have some power to work with, but very easy to mod and upgrade. Unless you are trying to build a drag truck, basic leaf sprung rear is going to out perform the rest of the truck with its light rear end anyway. I've seen a stock 77 take 25 MPH corners at 80+, and even the rear end held on to the pavement.

The biggest thing I see is all the fabrication work needed to mount a LUV on the S10 frame. Length and width are different, and not one single cab mount will be in the right place. By the time you get done welding mounts on the frame, you will have done much more work than it takes to mod the stock frame. If you are looking for options to drop it to the ground, air bags, and 5 lugs, then I think there are easier solutions to all of those problems without downgrading frame strength.

Sure there are more bolt-em-on-and-run parts for the S10 frame and suspension, but a LUV body is REALLY not just bolt it on. Its a lot of work.

Here is what I'd go for with what you've got and what you want. 5 lug rear, S10 axle would work depending on the size of motor you go with. Get your front hubs drilled out for 5 lugs, there is a guy on here that will do it and include the studs. Then either lower the front using the torsions, or convert it to coilovers. There are several builds here that have done it. If you are really wanting to get extreme, 4 link the rear and cut the frame to tuck the rear axle, air bags and controller, and really sit it on the ground.

Not much I can say about the longbed vs short. An S10 frame will not match up wheel openings to a short bed LUV cab and bed though. Personally, I like the long bed look if you are going for low low. It just makes it look that much lower being long too.

Owning a LUV can be kind of hard. There isn't much you can just go out and buy to bolt on. That makes it look attractive to convert to something that has more aftermarket bolt on upgrades available. If you look though you can almost always find ways of accomplishing the same things without all the expensive bolt on upgrades. You have to work harder to find the right parts without all the catalogs of parts and pieces telling you what to get, but the end result can be better and stronger. Plus it involves you a little more in the build.

There are very few frame swaps that are at all easy. I have seen a lot of LUV frames under other bodies actually. It is a strong frame, has a lot of mount points, and is a good base to build on for even pretty extreme modifications.
