I am on vacation at my Fiancee's Parents house, where my 1980 Chevy LUV is being stored right now. I forgot to bring my Hayne's manual for the procedure to replace the rear axle bearings. I have the new bearings, the gear oil, and totally forgot the manual. I am hoping one of you on the list may be able to take the time to write the procedures out for me, step by step. Her dad has the presses and shop full of tools plus experience, so we might be able to do it without help, but confidence so we're doing it right, and proper torque settings would be much appreciated. I think the axle has c-clips, and won't need a press from what I remember reading, but I'm at a loss. Her parents house is 2 &1/2 hrs from home, so its not easy to come out here all the time, and I need help with the information. I tried looking for on-line manuals, and checked a couple Library sites, but the LUV is to rare an old. I found nothing, so I am asking the list for help. Thanks for your efforts, and taking the time to read this, plus any answers. Keep on Trucking! Aloha

Okay list-members. I have the truck in the air, on blocks, with rims and tires removed. My Fiancee's Father is trying to help me, and we are both stuck. He's worked on tons of vehicles, but this is his first LUV, and we're having trouble removing the drums, to get at the axle bearings, for replacement. The vehicles I am used to are VW's. The '89 Trooper I used to have had four wheel disk brakes, and my Honda Accord has four wheel disks as well. I don't have my manual, so I am relying on help from anyone on the list this weekend. I can't get up here all the time, and I was really hoping this part of my build would be done, so I can work on wiring and starting the engine next time I come. Please help with the steps, as I am having trouble finding anything on the net as well. Thanks, Aloha

Sounds like your drums have a lip worn in them. Back off the rear brake shoes with the adjuster.

Just checking that you removed the screw holding the drum to the axle?

Try a bigger hammer. I struggled on my first Luv in the 80's and finally gave up. I took it to a brake shop and he whips out a small sledge and hits it once on the front and off it came.

Thank you so much for your input, everyone. So it seems like somewhere along the line, a mechanic doing a previous brake job left off the screw that holds on the drum. That key look to the center-front of the brake drum made us think it could be a threaded drum. We didn't want to try turning it the wrong way and making it too tight, or totally ruining the drums. The old jumping in before checking the water for hazards problems. Luckily my Fiancee, and her Mom, found a thread on LUVTruck.com, "can't get rear brake drum covers off." So we ended up doing the spray with WD-40, and hit it with a hammer. We pulled the brake drums apart, removed the 4 bolts behind the baking plate off with a 17 mm socket/ratchet, removing the brake hard line with 10 mm wrench, pulled the E-brake cable out of the backing plate, and pulled the axle by using a lugnut to bolt a chain to the wheel stud, then whipped it like Indiana Jones. Her Dad kept rotating and pulling a little on the axle each time I whipped it, so I didn't pull it out onto the ground. Took three hard whips, and a baby whip at the end. We used his press to press out the bearing. I only did the Passenger side so far, and the race feels fine, but the bearing was warped. Neither of us could figure out how it could bulge/bend but not damage the race, but apparently I was able to diagnose the problem, and stop driving it before any more damage was done. I forgot to buy the Bearing seal though, and my Fiancee, and her Mom went to buy one at CarQuest in town. I sent her the measurements with pictures, after we realized we forgot to send them with the old seal, so they didn't drive for nothing. The Guy at the counter half-assed it, and didn't pull out a tape to measure, and we have the wrong bearing seal. Tomorrow, we have to drive back into town to exchange/buy another seal. Hopefully then I can button everything up finally, and one less thing will be off the list to make my LUV roadworthy again. I will keep everyone posted, and show pictures hopefully when I'm done. That way anyone else with this problem should fly through it. Thanks again list-members. Aloha
