I've had great luck straightening my bumpers over the years, and after pulling one truck home with the other this wknd, I had to do the same again. The trick is to get them off the truck and back them up with something solid. Its easiest to remove the 6 frame bolts rather than the 8 chrome bumper bolts. I used a wooden work bench as the anvil. A hammer with a smooth face and a a bit of a radius seems to work the best. With a little effort you can make what seems like a throw away bumper almost as good as new.

any before and after pics? both of my bumpers are pretty mangled and if i could get them straight enough to keep it would save a lot of searching for replacements

So you're saying when you work on the bumper you keep it on the bumper brackets?

I have a rear bumper for my 79 Mikado which is all dented, twisted, and rusted...

I didn't take any pics of before and after on earlier attempts so I did this time. This was a pretty marginal bumper to start but it will give you an idea of what I'm talking about. Finished results are not perfect. There are dimples and waves. But the shape is right and on anything other than a very straight truck this will not look out of place.
Sorry about the pics. Not the easiest thing to get good photos of with all the reflections.

The chrome shop I use here straightens them for me.

With a lot of force! Good luck with that, I replaced my bumper back in 1988 and most of them were very rusted tight back then. Had to get vise grips on the head of the bolt to hold it. They have a square hole in the bumper that the back of the bolt fits into, the problem is the bumper is so thin, if the nut is seized at all, it just rounds the hole in the bumper and spins. My bumper was trashed and I made it worse trying to get the bolts out and that was over 20 years ago. Soak the heck out of them with some kind of lubricant and let them sit for a long while before you try to turn them.
