so i have an 81 luv and just replaced the head gasket about 2 months ago. i got it all put together, and i removed al the smog stuff. but now when i start it it run ok until i give it gas then it runs like crap. the suction in the carb is chopy and gets worse when i give it gas. any help would be great cause i start school in about two weeks and this is my only ride.

I would guess that it has to do with removing the smog equipment. Check for vacuum leaks.

Take a can of carb cleaner and spray it at the base of the carb and on the hoses to check for vacuum leaks...if idle changes...you have a vacuum leak!

ok so i checked for all possible vacuum leaks and came up with nothing. so now when i hit the throttle it tries back fire out of the carb correct me if im wrong but isnt that a timing issue???i would take it to a shop but i cant afford it

Did it run good for the 2 months after the head gasket?

Not to disparage the work you have done but I would first make sure everything got reinstalled correctly. Assuming that it is correctly installed it sounds more like a carb issue. Go back to basics. You have checked for a vacuum leak, look for correct vacuum hookups and then adjust the carb from scratch.

Assuming that all vacuum lines are connected properly, no vacuum leaks like already said, I would definately recheck the cam timing. May have installed the chain one tooth off time, and it will run crappy that way.
