Looks like I'll probalby run 5/16, but first got test my pump and see if fuel pickup has a block

Ok, I got this from Oldisuzuist (not sure on sp).
Pretty sure it's 5/16". Is your fuel filter connector not that size? And the outlet on the fuel pump?
Should be easy enough to check, test fit one end of the 3/8" line onto any of the metal connectors in the system, if it is a loose fit then the 3/8" is the wrong size, the rubber line should be a very snug fit, hard to press onto the metal connector with a clamp only necessary to insure it stays together.
Getting the larger hose clamped tight enough to seal under pressure & not leak would be the only thing to keep you from using the 3/8" line, the size of the hose won't determine the fuel pressure, the smallest passage in the system does. If you hook a 3/8" hose to a 5/16" fitting the fuel pump will pressurize the 3/8" line to a point that it will force fuel through the 5/16" opening, doesn't matter if the opening is only a 1/4" long like the mouth of the a metal connector or 4' long like a section of 5/16" hose it takes the same pressure to move fuel through that opening. This assumes the pump is pushing the fuel, not sucking it (like a frame-rail mounted electric pump pushing fuel to the carb). a larger hose diameter on the suction side will defimitely make the pump work harder & reduce volume (like from the pump to the tank).
