I have a 1980 4x4 Luv with a recently rebuilt 1.8. Ive had it sitting on the stand for a year or so. back when I pulled it and sent it out for the build I also sent the flywheel out for a resurfacing and bought a new clutch and presure plate at NAPA (8.5" disc per stock spec napa showed). Flash forward to yesterday. I was prepping it all for installation and realized that my flywheel has 8 bolt holes (which the new 8.5" clutch and PP fits perfectly) and the crank has 6 . So, either the guy who refinished my flywheel gave me back the wrong one, or the engine builder swapped out my crank from an 8 bolt to a 6 bolt. My question.....Did the 1980 4x4 Luv 1.8 ever come with an 8 bolt crank or did they all have a 6 bolt crank like the 2wd did?

As far as I know all 1.8 gas luvs were 6 bolt cranks. I remember the clutch disc was enlarged on 80 4x4 models to 8.5 inch.
The 79 4x4 had a 7-7/8 inch disk. I suspect maybe a wrong flywheel assy, possibly from the diesel engine or maybe a later Isuzu model.

well I went through my parts and my flywheel is an 8 bolt unit and my old clutch mates to it perfectly ( 8.5" clutch) But my recently rebuilt engine (was sent out to a local engine builder) came back with a 6 bolt crank. So now my flywheel wont bolt up and the 8.5" clutch I have wont fit to the spare 6 bolt flywheel I have.

I have a '79 engine in my garage right now and it has 6 bolts on the flywheel. I would suspect that they are all the same.

I have also heard that 79 still used the 7.875 clutch rather than the 1980 8.50" clutch so I'm assuming they were not the same.

Anyone have an original 1980 unit?

I recently pulled 2 80 engines. One a 4x4 and the other 2x4.
The 4x4 engine when into the 2x4 longbed.
Both were 6 bolt crankshafts and the pressure plates and clutch was larger in the 4x4.
I agree that you likely have some later Isuzu Pup or Trooper parts swapped in.

Ok, so was the flywheel on the 4x4 different somehow to accept the 8.5 clutch & pressure plate? Niether my old, or my new identical 8.5 replacement pressure plate will bolt up to the 6 bolt flywheel thats from a 79 2wd parts truck. The bolt holes and alignment holes are off just a little too much to allow it to bolt up.

It looks like the 4X4 has the larger clutch.

Yes it does, but here's the rub. The larger clutch does not fit the 6 bolt flywheel I have (which is off of an 80 2 WD truck). Where do I find a 1980 6 bolt 4x4 flywheel that will accept the larger clutch?

Well I don't know how one would find one but my engine builder came up with a 6 bolt flywheel that accepts the 8.50" clutch (my 1980 2WD version was different in that only the 7.875" clutch would fit it). The pins and holes are in different locations but the flywheel looks otherwise identical. Must be a one year only 4x4 specific part....Man what a headache!

I'll post pics later.

I'm actually picking up a '80 4x4 engine and trans in MT sometime in mid July. I'll let you know if it has a good flywheel.

I have one now so I'm good, but thanks anyway. I would be curious to know which type it has though, 6 bolt vs 8, and 7.875" vs 8.50" clutch.

Finally picked it up. It appears to be a 6 bolt 7.875. I was told it was from an '80 LUV.
