When you pull the handle the hood is supposed to pop up about an inch or so, but mine doesn't. If the handle is held back toward the drivers seat, the hood can then be pulled up. Anybody have a picture of a good hood latch in the open position? I think mine must need some kind of spring in the latch under the hood.

Yep, your missing a spring, or the pop-up lever is messed up. A picture will help, but you should be able to see where a spring would go. There's a long lever with a hole in the end for one side of the spring.

Thanks bamaland 101, I appreciate the picture idea. A thousand words as they say. I have never paid much attention to the latch mechanism. When I looked at it I noticed another little piece of the mechanism shaped like a cable connector. It's hard to tell what's been done to it in the past. The guys father drilled two holes in the hood and bent allthread into the shape of a handle and bolted it to the drivers side of the hood, but I'll fix that too.

Hey Ben, I looked again and saw a spring that looks like it came off the throttle of a lawnmower engine with about the same tension as a wet noodle. I know it's going to need a lot of tension to pop that hood up. I'm anxious to see what the pic will reveal.

Bamaland101, Thank you your trouble. From that pic, looking down at mine is the same as yours. The front view is where the other spring is located. Also I will shoot it with some good penetrating oil and see if that will help.

Here is a pic of mine, the big spring below the latch in front pushes the hood up after the other one has released the latch.

Thanks Tilted. Really clean new under your hood, and that latch looks brand new.
Found out that the front hook on the latch gets pushed down, and that does the trick. Mine is bent way up as if someone repaired it. Guess I need a new latch.

Hope it helped. and actually my engine compartment is really dirty as it is hard to tell my hood latch has been chromed, but that will do that sitting for 14 years. :(

The pop up lever is definitely messed up. Instead of curling over the top of the latch like in both photos, it's bent almost straight up, and at the pivot point it's pressed in. Anybody got a good hood latch for sale?
