I've posted on this issue on other threads but maybe had the topic off track to the issue at hand, hopefully someone can help?

I have a 100% stone stock 1980 4x4 Luv (original California truck if that matters). I pulled the original engine and trans for a rebuild, I send the flywheel to get it surfaced and kept and neatly organized all of the original used parts (clutch, pressure plate, nuts and bolts, etc.) to aid in putting it all back together when the time came.

Flash forward a year, engine is rebuilt on the stand, I get out the resurfaced flywheel, purchase a new clutch and pressure plate (from NAPA, 8.5" clutch specd for an 80 4x4 LUV per thier parts book, it matches up to my old used one identically) and revisit my parts stash for all the nuts bolts, etc. What I find is that my newly rebuilt engine now has an 6 bolt crank and my original flywheel has an 8 bolt pattern and won't bolt up.

So.....What to do? Everyone tells me that ALL 1972 and up LUV engines had a 6 bolt crank, yet mine apparently had an 8 bolt crank (which is now MIA after the rebuild). So, I go to my 1980 2WD LUV parts truck, I pull the trans to get the flywheel (6 bolt) and start comparing the details. What I find is that yes, it will bolt up to my engine which now has a 6 bolt crank, HOWEVER, the new 8.5" clutch I bought (remember, it's specd for a STOCK 80 LUV 4x4) will not bolt to the 6 bolt flywheel! The pressure plate dowls and bolt holes are off and won't allow it to bolt up. The only clutch that fits the 6 bolt flywheel is the 7.875" clutch and pressure plate. So if the flywheels and cranks were all the same why won't the stock replacement clutch bolt up to it? I double checked with NAPA and a few other parts stores, they all spec out the same part# for the application.

So, was there a special 6 bolt flywheel for a 1980 4x4 LUV that allowed a 8.5" clutch to bolt up? Something is wrong here, either the 6 bolt flywheel or the 8 bolt crank. HELP!

The manual shows only one crankshaft. It does however show two different part #'s for 2WD and 4WD Flywheels. So I would guess that you have the wrong flywheel.

The 2WD series 5-12 flywheel is part #94200674 and for 4WD series 10-12 it is #94217156. The crankshaft for series 5-12 shows only one part # which is 94201038.

It looks like series 1 is the only crankshaft that may be different (as far as number of bolts) with 4 bolts instead of 6.

Check the part# for '83-'87 1.9 engine flywheel also, I think you will find it the same as the 4wd 1.8 engine. And the 1.9 used the same 8.5" clutch as the 1.8 4wd and all 2.3's.

Well I don't know how one would find one but my engine builder came up with a 6 bolt flywheel that accepts the 8.50" clutch (my 1980 2WD version was different in that only the 7.875" clutch would fit it). The pins and holes are in different locations but the flywheel looks otherwise identical. Must be a one year only 4x4 specific part....Man what a headache!

I'll post pics later.
