Is the rear main a 2 piece seal or 1? Is a 1 piece a replacement for an oem 2 piece? I'm comming up with 2 options and I'm wondering, do I get the two piece or the 1 piece? is the 2 just a 1 piece with an extra half moon? Yeah, can you believe I'm going to try to take an engine out for the very first time? Should I be concerned about breaking things? I'm a little nervous to try this myself, but I got access to a cherry picker sooo.... right. help.

In mine, it's a one-piece. But then, mine is a diesel. What are you driving?

I think he has a 77 LUV. It's a 1 piece seal.

I would not use a cherry picker to pull the motor just for a rear seal. I'd pull the transmission out and do the seal with the motor in place. Unless you have a 4wd, pulling the transmission is much easier. I pulled my transmission and re-installed it without using any kind of lift.

Oh, and that's NOT a dumb question.

I agree, pull the transmission.

I'd like to jump in on this. what if you do have a 4x4? is pulling the engine easier?

The 4x4 oil pan won't clear the front axle without some extensive extra work, so you essentially have to pull the tranny to pull the engine, so go ahead & just pull the tranny. Then if you can't get enough clearance by dropping the oil pan down a bit it won't be much more to pull the engine as well.

Wow! Thanks fellas that likely saved me a whole lotta' needless work. I'm gonna' do the rear main and oil pan and oil plug and see if that solved my problem. Is there a Front main seal? perhaps its called something different?
I did the valve cover seal and the two little half moon pieces a while ago and those are holding great by the looks.

Wow! NOW you mention the oil pan. That changes everything. You won't get to that by just pulling the transmission. I've read that some can be changed by lifting the motor one side at a time, but I'm not sure this one can. But either way, I think you'll have to lift it off the mounts at least a little bit. Someone else may be able to answer that question.

Dang. I hope I can get away with just dropping the tranny. It's a 77 luv with 2wd, all stock really, pretty strait forward I think. Gonna get some assistance as I don't own a jack that will hold the tranny and I'm not positive I'm he-man enough to bench press it. :D then again, maybe I am? either way... Anyone have a protip here for me?

My 5-speed weighs in at about 100 lbs. My truck was on about 8" ramps and I was able to lift the tailshaft up over the rear transmission mount, then lift the front up enough to stab the shaft in. So I never really had to lift the whole thing at once. Your 4-speed should weigh less.
