I found a cylinder head that had new seals put in it 20 years ago, and has sat on the shelf since. I am nearly certain that this is the one I need but with my own head still buried under everything, I'm not positive. I wanted to run it by the pros on here before I buy it. It allegedly belongs to a 73-76 G180z, according to the seller, but he was not sure about the various differences between LUV heads over the years.

It's got the intake, exhaust, and those bloody smog-related ports in 3 places on the carb(driver) side of the head. Nothing but the plugs on the passenger side.

I know the later series LUV engines had the carb and exhaust(or was it intake?) flipped to the passenger side, but is anyone aware of any other nuances that would differentiate the same-side exhaust/intake heads? Was there just one variation of the head which had both intake/exhaust on the same side, or should I be looking out for other differences?

I ask because I don't know much about the Series 1-3 LUV engines, and I don't know whether there was an eariler version of the head that I don't know about.
I should probably add that I've got a Series 4, '75 LUV with the stock G180z. As far as the engine goes, everything except the valve cover seems to be original.








The subtext here is probably obvious: I blew the gasket! And I just got it running too. I'm buying this extra head as an insurance policy. I guess I should have expected some leaks to crop up since the thing sat dry for so long. I wonder what's next?

If I remember correctly 73,74 and 75 all had the exhaust on drivers side with the intake.later years had the intake on the passenger side.

Thanks, cleaver. That's what I understood, but I thought there might have been further variance in the head design pre-1973.

Have any idea how I tell the difference? The Illustrated Parts Catalog has the following images, but it's not so cut and dry. The series 5 and onward are very clearly different, but the first two versions of the head are virtually identical.

Can anyone else lend some advice?

I can't differentiate Series 1 from Series 2-4. The only slight clue is a pipe listed as part#18 on the Series 1 cylinder head illustration and part#44 on the Series 2-4 illustration. Series 1 bends forward, Series 2-4 bends left. I'm not confident enough to rely upon this detail in and of itself.
