Greetings from Seattle,

I'm considering possibly purchasing my father's LUV from him. He's had it a few years and it is in "sound mechanical condition". I wanted to touch base with some real LUV enthusiasts and see what you think his truck is worth. I think my father over-inflates everything's value. He hasn't yet told me how much he wants for it - he's kind of dragging on the conversation (over email).

Here's the info he has sent me about the truck, in his words:

1979 Chevy LUV
VIN: CRN1498266484
1.8L - 111 CID - 2 BBL Carburetor
2 wd/4 wd selectable with a low-high axle
5 speed Manual Transmission w/ extra shift lever for two speed axle
Towing package
Rhino Lining for the bed
Tire size: P205/75R14 95S (all in great condition)
Reinforced bracing on Chrome roll bar
3 Roof mounted spot lights
Grill Guard with covered fog lights
Stereo system w/ great speakers behind seat

I recently put it in Conaway Motors for routine service and asked them to keep it for 2 weeks and drive it back and forth to work every night. The truck is fun to drive hard so I told them to drive it hard and let me know if they suspected anything wrong. They gave it a glowing report and refused to charge me anything for the service because it was so much fun. When I bought it I drove it back from Spokane over Snoqualmie Pass in 4 wd – low speed axle as fast as it would go and as hard as I could and got 25 mpg.

And the pic... it's my favorite color! :D

I am looking for a small pickup for general light duty, and to haul broken motorcycles occasionally. It would never be a daily driver for me.

What do you think it is worth? Here's the NADA: http://www.nadaguides.com/Classic-Cars/ ... kup/Values

Thank you for any and all comments, advice, and smartass remarks.

~Sarah

That is a nice truck!

Ask him where the transmission came from. They never had a stock 5 speed in 1979.

Bought one very similar to this condition and paid $3000 for it. Only had 44k original miles on it though. Have seen others go from $2000 to $5000 in that kind of condition. I absolutely love that color also. A little to much chrome for me.

Thanks for the replies! My Dad said he would sell it to me for $2000 - and according to you two, that seems reasonable.

I will ask him about the transmission. Likely it's a 4spd and he just forgot... he's 74, and getting awfully forgetful.

If it still looks like it does in that picture, $2000 is a steal.

Yeah, I can understand why he drags the conversation on. Want to give us some pictures of the interior, for the sake of it?

If that LUV is as nice in person as the pictures show, it wouldn't last a couple day's in the classifieds here at 2 grand.

So I bought the Luv today! Thanks everyone for the replies. I paid my dad $2000 for it. I registered her with collector plates today... no emissions or tabs, ever again!

She is a little rough here and there.
    Something rattles...
The headliner was previously moldy, it has mold stains. She smells a bit musty inside, not bad. :)
I drove her home in the rain... water dripped on the top of my ankles (through the dash, and wiring?? 8O).
There is cancer below the doors, in the body on both sides. I poked it and it crumbled apart there. It's severe enough I'll try to find a bodyman who will cut those areas out and weld in some new metal for me. Thankfully, it's in the area that's painted black.
The interior has all been carpeted, and I see a little surface rust around the edges of the glued-down carpeting. In poking it I found a couple of areas where I heard some crunching, so I assume there is rust under the carpet. :(
Someone installed a ridiculously bass-heavy stereo... it has a large amp, a subwoofer, and (2) 8" speakers behind the seat. I'm more of a rocker, I'll have to tune out some of the bump so I can properly scream some guitar riffs... 8)

She's going to be perfect for hauling motorcycles. :D

These trucks are notorious for leaking around the windshield wiper/cowl area. A site search should pull up some threads on fixing that with some spark plug boots...
