Suggest you do some research on turboing your 1.8 before you spend a lot of money. There are numerous articles on this site about turboing one of these, including an article I wrote several months ago. Back in the 70s I owned a turbo shop in Las Vegas and we turboed several vehicles for dealers from both LV and CA. Some worked out very well, like the VW Diesel Rabbit, Toyotas, and Mazda Rotaries, but the Luv 1.8 were a disaster! We could not keep head gaskets from blowing the first time the engine detonated. I realize there are some excellent products availabe now that were not then, like the MSD Boost retard systems and electonic water injection, but I would be very hesitant to do this unless you have some really deep pockets cause it is going to get very expensive.
Good luck and please keep us informed of your progress,
dusty scjconv

Thanks for the advice. i dont plan on running super high horsepower its mostly for show because i saw a mighty max featured in mini truckin a while back and jamie did an amazing job with it and ever since then i have been stuck on it. so full blown show truck is where my truck is headed in the near future.

I think you could do a practical Turbo installation on a 1.8 IF you keep the boost down, o-ring the block use very high tensile strength head bolts, use a MSD boost retard system, electonic water injection and perhaps most of all a light foot! Keep your boost down to 5 lbs or less and AVOID all power shifts.
Another good item is one of the Pinto-Weber carburetors, these are easy to re jet and most importantly relatively easy to "index" the carburetor power circuit to actual intake pressure. If you decide to use one of these carbs please contact me and I will explain how to do this
One thing to remember is that you will pickup almost 50 % simply by providing just the amount of air the engine uses. Figure it this way, and these are simply numbers, a normally aspirated 1.8 runs about 70% efficient, but with a turbo you will have to provide all the air needed before you can get boost so you have picked up 30 % more efficientcy with 0 boost/vacumn. Now take a 1.8 with 7 lbs of boost, what you have added is basically 1/2 of another atmophere of pressure, you have made your 1.8 into a 2.7 engine. This should give you about 50% more rear wheel horsepower!!
Just so food for thought, wish you good luck, keep us posted.

i say go for it if you have the time and dont plan to throw 20 psi at it
it would make it a lot more unique at shows since most of them either have the stock setup or a 350.. polish the turbo and the piping and it would look great under the hood.
i was going to turbo mine even had most of the parts gathered up to make the swap.... then sold it off to buy a 4.3 v6
keep reading thru ozgemini they have info on head stud kids, custom copper head gaskets etc etc they make me wish i lived down under

reminds me of the syclones and typhoons. those little trucks were nasty. theres even a thread where a guy twin turbo'd a 4.3 in an S10 but it didnt have AWD but it was gorgeous!!!

yeah i was thinking it would be fun to find a wrecked astro and yank out the awd drivetrain from the case back axles and all, narrow it and throw it under the luv.. leave the truck stock looking no fancy paint or wheels... with a remote mount turbo and about 7-8 psi it would outrun damn near anything it rolled up next to at a light  ... with syclone and typhoon taken... only leaves hurricane :/

anyway.. how goes your turbo planning? a good bet for a turbo would be an IHI RHB5.. isuzu impulse used one so thats as close as you would get to "stock" turbo and the ones off the thunderbirds have a big bigger compressor "afaik" and the gemracing turbo manifold from ozgemini is probably the best design you will find to either buy or make your own... look into the 2.6 or 2.3 intake manifold lowers from troopers.. may give some more flow potential if your going to go all out and make a custom plenum.. just kickin ideas your way

ive noticed that on turbogemini.com they sell the kit that changes it to EFI and pretty much everything needed except for intercooler for right at 2400 + shipping. so im probably gonna do that once i get the money saved up and completely rebuild my stock engine. i'm starting on the frame when my tax return comes in so stay tuned for the sfbd thread coming soon.
