ok i have a 1980 chevy luv the motor just seized i can fix it fairly easy but my real interest is in somthing different i just got the truck given to me and have not been happy with the power or speed limitations due to low geared trans i want to do a swap intirely and dont really want to mess with trans work what i want to know is the simplest option as close to bolt in for what im looking for i would like higher speeds while maintaining the actual power factor but i would prefer to keep my four wheel drive for a crwler purpose but i also drift so if it works out to lose it i will slam the truck and i want to stay american was not to pleased to see an isuzu engine under the hood but would love to hear foreign options price is a petty big factor thanks for looking and any help works

Ok, I have a 1980 chevy LUV. The motor just seized, and I can fix it fairly easy. But, my real interest is in something different. I just got the truck given to me and have not been happy with the power or speed limitations due to the low geared trans. I want to do a swap entirely, and I dont really want to mess with trans work. What I want to know is the simplest option, as close to bolt in. What I am looking for: I would like higher speeds while maintaining the actual power factor, but I would prefer to keep my four wheel drive for a crawler purposes. But, I also drift ,so if it works out to lose it, I will slam the truck and I want to stay american. I was not to pleased to see an Isuzu engine under the hood, but would love to hear foreign options. Price is a pretty big factor. Thanks for looking, and any help works.

So you obviously didn't know that a Chevy Luv is just a re-badged Isuzu pick up? These vehicles were brought to the US during the fuel embargo crisis in the 70s. You can change the gearing in the rear end to get more rpms. You could also rebuild the engine to add a turbo or a super charger(which I would do) so you can drift. You could swap a bigger Isuzu motor that already has more CID.Search the site for post on swaps.

im going to keep this simple swap in a v8 and a higher geared rear end if you want wheel speed and power

anyways to answer your original question the 5 speed out of a 4wd trooper or a 4wd pup will bolt up to the engine with out a problem (85+ on trooper idk on pup) though unless you build some massive torque with the stock engine you aren't going very far with drifting...

http://www.isuzupup.com/viewtopic.php?t=2615

concider this a crash course

hey some of that info would be a great addition to the 5-speed swap section... oh wait your 4wd never mind

turbo impulse trans (0.855) with 3.73 rear gears (3.19 final drive) and 25.5" tires (195-75/15) = 95mph at 4k rpm

A couple of things you might want to think about, number 1 is since you have four wheel drive you will have to keep the gear ratios the same front and rear. 2. You are very limited as to what engines will bolt up to the stock 1.8 transmission you currently have. Suggest you do a lot of reading on this site before you tear into it, will save you a lot of money. The first mini truck 4 Xs usually swapped a complete Jeep front and rear end into them, might be the way to go for you too. The stock Luv 4Xs front ends were pretty weak and don't take much abuse before self destructing.
Good luck,
