So ive been working on a 79 Luv 4x4. It sat for 15 years and i just put in a fresh motor from a LUV i had parted out about a year and a half ago. I drove the truck so i know everything worked great on the engine. Anyway today i was letting it idle for awhile becuase we just got it dialed in and running good last night. It was running and then suddenly it quit. Its getting no spark whatsoever to the spark plugs. I trouble shooted all day with my friends identical 79 4x4, swapping coils, rotors, wires, dist caps, condenser between the trucks and everything off mine worked fine on his. My points dont look fried at all. I tested power to the coil with the test light and it gets power fine, when its cranking though the test light does not flicker like it should, it just stays on solid. I read that this should tell me the problem is in the distributor. bad pick-up? or? do i need a whole new dist?

any info helps thank you.

I would try bench testing your ignition system. I used these methods before to test my ignition.

Here is a video on testing a coil.

And one on how to test your ignition.

If you need to replace your distributor I suggest upgrading to a electronic distributor.
I picked up mine for $85 from AutoPartAuctions.com VIA ebay. The first one they sent me didn't work so I emailed them and I had a replacement the next week. Great company.

Here is it item number and description #390207836813 Distributor 1983-97 Isuzu I-Mark, Trooper

Contact info.

You could have lost the drive to the distributor. Check the position of the rotor and crank it over and if it is still in the same pace, the drive could be bad. Pull it out and take a look.

Yes, pull off the distributor cap and make sure rotor is turning while cranking it over. Also remove the black/red wire from the distributor, then with the key on, ground and unground that wire. Should throw a spark from the coil wire every time you unground it. Thats what your points do.

The distributer drive failed on my S15. The rolled pin connecting the drive gear to the oil pump just shattered. It consequently caused the distributer to quit too. Had to pull the distributer and get into the hole to get all the metal 'chunks' out. There must have been 20 pcs of a 3/16 X 3/4" rolled pin. The auto parts guy felt so sorry for me that he gave me the rolled pin as I was making repairs outside his store. Nice fella.
