Hey guys, noob here. Been lurking the forum for a few days now. Lots of great info. I have an opportunity to buy a 79 Mikado 4 spd 2wd longbed for $100. It has been sitting for about two years. The guy says it ran when he parked it but it needs a new exhast (SP) manifold or header. This truck will be used for economy. I don't care about power as long as it is reliable and economical. I have decided to de-smog it since I'd like to buy a header for it anyway. I also plan to do the other major upgrades such as carb, e-dist, e-fan, ect ect... I drive about 56 miles a day, 80% of which is flat and I usually only drive about 60-65 mph. If I can squeeze 30mpg out of it, it should save me well over $200 a month. More would be better though. Anyway, which header would be best for my situation? Thanks,

The only aftermarket header available is the Pacesetter #1105.

I have a stock 80' 2wd luv and am getting about 24 mpg. That's driving on the freeway at 60-65mph and minimal in town driving.

22mpg is the best I have gotten in my 78, totally stock. I only get 15mpg with my 79 4x4 with a header, weber, orgy, and de smog-ed, and 32's I think for tires.

I have an 80 2wd stock and I was only getting about 22 mpg highway. I'm working on rebuilding the engine and putting the pacesetter and weber setup... I don't know if I'm gonna get an Offy or not. They're kind of spendy. Maybe go 5 speed too

22 to 25 or so sounds about right. I still have Offy intakes available if you are ever interested. They aren't as spendy as the Weber, but they are an expense as is any parts like this. I keep the price fair at about wholesale. If you want any info send me a PM. I don't think you would gain much mpg with the upgrades, but it should increase performance without much sacrifice in fuel economy. Here's an old magazine article that has been posted here on the site many times before. It is a nice read and talks about the upgrades and a possible increase of 25hp. Thanks guys. I still have yet to buy the truck. I definately will though. Crazy not too with gas only going to go up. I'm going to throw about $500 or so into it to freshen it up. Things like brakes, fuel system, tune up, tires, exhaust, electrical components, ect ect...
Like I said, I plan on doing the major upgrades and who knows, maybe in the future I may want an intake so I'll definately keep you in mind Moka. Thanks for the offer. I hope you all had a good Christmas and have a safe New Year!
