Hello.
First time I have used these forums, so hello. And I bought a month ago a 1980 Chevy Luv 4x4 mikado. It has a rebuilt motor with great oil pressure, new altenator, starter, clutch, tires. All and all a good pickup. I did buy it in not running condition, I had to get a new distributor. I have it running now but it misses under power. I will describe this problem in much more detail.
So as I said I bought this pickup when it was not running and had it towed home. I had to get a new distributor, I bought a remanfucatured unit from my local carquest store. Put it in and it was running but misses like the carb was out of tune and idling very high. Got it to my dads shop and started tuning the carb, got it to idle at 800 rpm and idles very smooth. I set the timing, checked the dwell on the points and got the idle mixture set. The pickup idles fine now. The problem is when I am driving it when I try to accelerate it cuts out and starts backfiring. When I left off of it and cruise, it runs fine. It is not drivable really in this shape, it barely goes 55 mph and doesnt run smoothly when it does go that fast. But I stop the truck and it idles smooth with no backfiring or missing. It idles like a champ. I am thinking I need to pull the carb apart and rebuild it, I allready have the kit to do it. But before I take it apart I want to make sure I am not missing a much simplier problem. There are two electronic devices on the side of this carb that I have not dealt with before... one is an anti-dielsing solenoid and a Coasting Valve assembly... according to the manual I have. Could one of these be the culprit? I have never worked on a carb that had these devices... I have worked on american carbs like holley and quadrajet. If these devices are not the problem, is there anything else I should check before I take the carb apart?
What is more interesting about this problem is that when it is cold, it does not seem to be such a probem... once it warms up it misses and backfires more.
Thanks for your help
