I recently did a tune-up on the luv, replaced the thermostat and flushed the cooling system. I drove the truck to work and back(100 miles round trip) and all was good. This morning I was in a hurry and didn't let her warm up and took of to work again.....few miles down the road the temp gauge pinned so i stopped, let er sit a couple mins. I then took the radiator cap off(which was not hot to the touch) and added about 24 ounces of coolant then started her up again and the needle dropped. After that I made it the 100 mile round trip again and no problem. What's going on? Air bubble in the system? I do not have coolant in my oil and I tested the thermostat before I installed it and all was good. No visible leaks beside some out of the overflow. Could this be a head gasket issue?

It could be a gasket issue. Hard to tell with the info. No coolant in the oil is a great thing as you know. Do you have an overflow tank on by the radiator? If so check for bubbles while it's running. That would be exhaust more than likely.....head gasket indicator. THis is just one more thing to check.

No i do not have an overflow container. Could I do one of those tests that tells you if you have exhaust gases in you cooling system?

The easiest way to tell that from my experience is looking into the overflow tank...that's how I found the one on my 81 Luv. It is a tank that I added and they are easy to add. About any plastic container that you can see into will work. Shove the overflow hose into fill it about half way with anti-freeze and see if it's blowing bubbles. Blowing bubbles just like a kid blowing bubbles into a drink with a straw. However when mine did this I had oil in my anti-freeze. That was a give away, and a damn mess, oil in the radiator and throughout the coolng system.

The coolant tank on my 77 is an old Prestone bottle. Stick to brand names.

Check your clamps and see if you got any cracks in hoses
