Guys
My 72 Luv put out heat like mad last winter. I had to put a new stat in about a month ago.Now I have to drive at 60 for about 5 miles before I can get heat in the cab. I didn't look at the temp of the stat I put in. Any suggestions for temp? I always used to use 160 degree ones in my other GMs.

180* should do... I wouldn't go any higher. That, and block all but 1/3 of the radiator (blocked on both sides, open in the middle for airflow across the fan) will be fine. Havent done that to a luv but on another isuzu-powered rig (i-mark) it worked great.

Ok...but last year here in SD I would get roasted out and no cardboard on the radiator. And it was ;like 25 below with out the windchill.I have a new 180 thermostat sitting here...maybe check the fluid and put it in tomorrow.

I can sympathize with you there. Not recently mind you but the winter of oh... 2003-04 it got so cold where I'm located that my i-mark's rad froze while driving down the road! Never seen a thing like it in my life until then. I had a water-circulating block heater on it and it was all good then... but about 30 miles into it an ice chunk developed that kept flow to a minimum and took out a hose and cracked the thermostat housing. Hard to believe I know... I remember the icy cold walk back to town after getting a ride 3/4 of the way home to get parts/tools and a ride back to the car... anyway... could also be a clogged up heater core... didn't think of that till just now.

I was thinking that too but after it get warm you can see when the stat opens. The temp gauge moves I think it is a 180 degree stat and I need to find a 160.

the heater valve is bypassed...so it is getting full coolant flow.Once it gets warm I have heat.Last winter I could drive 5 blocks and have heat..now it is like 3 miles.
