Just fixed two of my non working gas guages last weekend by soaking them in lemon juice for 2 hours. Both had corrosion to the point that the swinging arm wasn't making a good connection. I also replaced corroded connectors on the wires at the guage. Both now work great!

Bet that is what mine needs. When the tank is about half full, the gage goes to empty and stays there.

It worked for both of mine. You should read about 20-100 Ohms from full to empty. Both of mine were corroded to the point that the wiper arm that goes to ground wasn't making a connection. I also put an Eastwood kit in one of the tanks. It works pretty slick.
