guys, my dad helped me out and bought me a pretty nice 86 nissan 720. (it comes with certain conditions, but those are not important)

the truck has 209k on it right now. and while it's a decent rig, im really unfamiliar with this nissan z24 engine. it's supposed to be a fuel injected truck, but i can see it has almost the same damn hitachi carb that the luv has. (slightly modified)

there isn't anything really WRONG with it at the moment, other than needing ball joints and tires.

here's my question,

if there is a whine when shifting gears, is that a case of worn tranny or worn/almost worn out clutch?
i noticed that trying to put it in reverse is somewhat difficult since you can still feel the shaft spinning until you kind of jam in the gear and it engages.

any thoughts?

thanks guys!

-john

It sounds like a clutch with a new pilot bearing is needed, try a nissan forum they would know the issues on this type of truck.

Alot of those transmissions have syncronized 1st and reverse . Try slipping it into 1st then pull it out and see if it doesn't slide right into reverse . Once you figure out the combo you should be alright if you don't take it apart .

A clutch is only bad if it won't grab, because it's friction material is worn out. If a clutch won't release, it's not worn out, it needs adj., or to be bled, etc.

As far as the whine when shifting. It could be many things. Just leave it alone and drive it for a month or so. If it's getting worse look into it. If it stays the same just leave it alone. It might just be the nature of the beast.

The Z24 was upgraded to Z24i single-point fuel-injection (optional) for the 1986 models.

WIKIpedia is your friend . Make sure it has the nessesary fluids and drive it . Maybe dump some tecron in it every 4 months with a full tank of super before a road trip .

yeah, looks like shifting first and then reverse is the way to do it. thanks guys.

i think i will just change the fluids out and hopefully that helps things some.

tried looking at a nissan forum, but it's really broad. there isn't a 720 pickup forum out there that i could find.

about the z24 i, i did some reading and figured they did this towards the end of the production run, but its interesting that i seem to have a carbureted engine with an o2 sensor :smt017

O2 sensors are common on engines with carbs. Are you sure its a carb or is it a throttle body fuel injection set up. If it is a carb its a computer controlled unit that will change mixture with inputs from the O2 amoung other things. I remember working on a Z24 engine and it was throttle boby injected.

Step way back and take another look....and guess what else you'll see?

It isn't a Luv either.

Hence the above mentioned suggestion to go forth and aim all of your questions at the Nissan guys on their forums.

Sage advice IMHO. They probably have forgotten more than us Luv owners know about your truck.
