we put a new exhaust gasket on, before we did so the surface was scraped clean, but it is still leaking air. there is a bolt that just keeps turning, is there any kind of gasket sealant or metal tape? we can use that will hold up to the high heat? ( i apologize in advance if it sounds like a dumb question- been in the sun too long too many days in a row :smt117

You are going to have to pull the manifold and helicoil the bad threads. There is also a chance the manifold is warped. There is no sealant or tape to fix a leak like that.

Most likely, your manifold is warped, any machine shop in your area should be able to re-surface it for you. Shouldn't be more than $20.

Honestly, you shouldn't use anything as a gasket other than a gasket made for the application. The intake gasket and exhaust gasket are not that much. Check around, it is better to do it right the first time than to have to do it half a$$Ed several times, please don't take offense to that..., we have all done stuff half a$$Ed and had to revisit the issue later on~ best to do it correctly the first time so you don't have to worry about it or second guess your work. As far as the intake manifold being warped, not saying it can't happen, but if your intake is warped..., you have bigger fish to fry. If you got your intake hot enough to warp, I wouldn't be supprised if a cylinder or two werent damaged, let alone the head itself~

Just my opinion~

Also~ Gasket Sealer/Maker is intended to be used with a gasket, you put a lil dab of sealer/maker on you index finger and thumb and pass the paper gasket thru you fingers, applying a thin layer on each side. This will ensure a leak proof seal on any paper gasket. For Cork and Rubber gaskets, you want to do the same thing but instead of gasket maker/sealer, you would use engine oil (preferably new oil). This will allow the cork gasket to slide/shift into place evenly as you tighten it down.

OK I think things kind of ran away from your original question so let's go back there. Bolt won't tighten. First take the bolt to the part store and ask for a helacoil or Keensert in the correct size. Drill the hole out to the correct size(either should come with a drill bit) run a tap in the hole to cut threads keep it wet with light oil better to go in and out several time a little deeper each time. Use the included tool to install the thread insert. Examine the remaining holes to see if they need repair. NOW you have solved problem #1 now you can look at whether or not the manifold might be warped. Lastly remember this is a 30 year old truck it's always going to have little problems, because bearings seals hose are 30 years old also.
Good luck
