It is called a vacuum motor in the LUV Series 8 manual on page 6T-5.

It closes off the cold air intake and opens up the warm air supply from the exhaust manifold tube below, when the engine is cold. After warm up it bleeds off its vacuum and allows the cold air intake to open back up. All this controled by a sensor in the air cleaner base.

so heres what we did. we pulled the unit off and sucked air through it. the diaphragm in it pulls up but slowly went back down. we are trying to see if ours is in working order.

I'm not sure if it should hold vacuum or not. I'm thinking it should. But, this is a very minor smog item that is only used to get the eng. to warm up quicker. Once warm, it is not used and shouldn't effect the eng at all.

It should vaccum, if it leaks like it does you basically has a vaccum leak when it is activated

I'm sure it should hold vacuum. I would think you could find one somewhere as many of these air cleaner assemblys are discarded with all the carb replacements and all. Otherwise if you don't have to meet smog checks and all, just remove and plug the vacuum hose to the sensor under the air cleaner making it inoperable. It's internal spring will then keep it open in the normal cold air position.

we tested with a vacuum pressure gauge. with it hooked up it reads 0 if we unhook it and test, the vacuum meter read 14 inches steady on idle.
i understand it is called a vacuum motor however there are no images of one to google and no parts called that. could it be called by any other names? i am in california and it would be required for ca. standard emissions. its hard to believe its not an available part unless i am searching the wrong term (chevy luv vacuum motor) the diaphragm inside the unit must be faulty as vacuume leaks right through it.

It might also be called a dash pot? Or a air cleaner, warm air diverter?
When you go to the smog place the truck will be warmed up, so that thing will be in the open position anyway. I have never had a smog guy be so thorough that he checked that kind of stuff individually. They usually just look for the large items like egr, charcoal canister (if equiped), cat, things like that. Then they do a sniff test to check the exhaust. They will also check that the gas tank vapor recovery system is in good working order.

thanks we will try to google those terms. we tested with a vacuum pressure gauge. with it hooked up it reads 0 if we unhook it and test, the vacuum meter read 14 inches steady on idle.we are afraid it would fail the smog test as the diaphragm has a hole in it and resulting in having a vacuum leak

OMGoodness took forever BUT I FOUND IT !!!!!!
we found a thread
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/show ... p?t=375714
that someone needed the same piece
it available BRAND NEW at http://www.thepartsplaceinc.com/
Look up Part# CW8422Z it is called
AIR CLEANER VACUUM ACTUATED HEAT DIAPHRAGM & BRACKET - THIS IS THE VACUUM MOTOR THAT IS USED ON MOST ALL GM AIR CLEANERS
i am posting it so anyone whoever needs one knows where i found it after 2 days searching but the tread also says "I was told by the Parts Place that these motors are NOT supposed to hold vacuum. Not sure if that is right but when you test it, it should move the rod but leak down after. "

I dont think its the same part number for the LUV as it is for a 1/2 ton truck. It may look the same but I am betting it wont fit the LUV air cleaner. I have a couple laying around, when I tested them they do hold vacuum, they are not supposed to leak down as you stated before. I am not sure what you are doing with your truck, your post have you jumping around from part to part and it looks like not finishing anything you started. In my opinion it looks like you are over your head in the emissions repairs. You stated you need a carb but wont get one, most of your issues are with the carb. I told you a factory manual is better and would have answered most of the questions you have asked (and even answered some yourself) but the 15 bucks for the info the book has is not worth it to you. Until you help yourself I dont think I should help you with these off the wall questions, good luck.

By the way, the Chevy part number for the control motor is 94250215
