So check this out. I hooked up the direct wire from the battery to the fuel pump again (just to make sure it's Kapoot) and when I hit the toggle the starter begins turning the engine! WHAT!? I have one wire direct to the +, one wire to ground, and the other wire hooked to the fuel pump. There are even little stickers on the toggle so I can't screw it up. I'm not a mechanic, but this seems to indicate some electrical issue....Any suggestions? What would short out and make the starter fire through the fuel pump? :signanyone :signanyone :signanyone

Pump number 6!?!?!? Ok there is a serious issue. That's more pumps than any two trucks should go through in a life time. Have you tested any of the old (removed) fuel pumps after you replace them? I mean, hooking them up to a battery with it on the work bench to see if it operates or if it's totally dead? Like TJ said, with the filter before the pump protects the pump, after the pump is easier to push fuel through.

As far as why it's causing your truck to start with it wired directly to the battery.... :smt017 I have no idea. I can take a look thru my manual to see what might be causing it but I have no clue at the moment. I know that isn't what you want to hear but that's a new one on me.

I took out and tested the coil. My secondary windings were bad. I replaced it and put a fuel pump that I had from way back onto the truck (I tested it by hooking it up to the battery). The truck seems to run fine now, but the engine firing through the pump wiring has me worried. At the very least, I've learned that UTube has some very educational videos about testing coils. Thank you for your help. I'll keep you posted on the truck.

Just about any part of the coil going bad would kill your vehicle. When it cools back down then it will usually start again...until the coil goes completely bad. The only part here that makes me still wonder is after it stalled, it would start back up with starting fluid. Anyway, I hope this fixed the problem. Keep us posted.

When it is energized it produces a field over both sets of windings..might have been enough to kick it over...or the short wouldn't happen until the coil got hot.

The newer fuel pump seems to have fixed it quite nicely. Been running like a champ. Thanks to all who provided guidance. I'll post again for sure when I need help..

I have had a bad day, and am working on a beer. I think the normally closed contact of the fuel pump relay connects the start circuit to the fuel pump. Connecting the fuel pump to the battery could back feed to the start circuit.
