Not sure if there's a common problem with the 1.8's. They're original to the truck, so that makes them somewhat desirable to the owners who want to keep them original. I read that the Hitachi carburetor is ususally switched out to a Weber because the Hitachi is, well...old. ( I did it) My '79 has had issues with the fuse box; the brass holders corrode and cause all sorts of problems which are easly solved by cleaning them. The old gas tanks get muck built up and cause gas feed problems, and the gas lines themselves get soft and can collapse under suction created by the fuel pump. Being "old" mine has several phantom issues that are narrowly related to fuel supply.

I would say carbeuration and overheating that usually results in blown head gaskets...

vacuum lines cracking seems quite common as well thell run horred with a big vac leak.

but yes over heating is a big killer

are we taking early 70s 1.8 or late 70s 1.8 :?: cant remember if the early ones had different issues.

Make sure the Radiator is good and it does have a thermostat, right? Fan and shroud are good?

I've always heard that the head gaskets are quick to go on the back side of the engine (the LUV I bought was bad there and so was about 3 other LUVs I've seen).

The overheating can be remedied by changing out the thermostat with a balanced 160 deg thermostat that is available in the Mr. Gasket line at any local O'reilly store. I can't remember the part number but I can get it for you if you like.

I have ran it without one and with a couple of new ones in the past couple of months, if it can be solved by just a different temperature thermostat that would suprise me, the radiator has been flushed twice and seems as if it is working properly, no leaks at least.

Flushing a radiator dose not always clean it fully they need to be taken out and roded out to clean the tubes completely.

The most common problem I have with my LUVs is the gas tank is always empty. :P

The most common problem with the stock g180's appears to be a distinct lack of basic mechanical skills...

i took it out completely and flushed it with a water hose until it was totally clean, there is also a kink in the back of the intake manifold where the heater core was by passed i dont know if that would have anything to do with it, i also have an electric fan off of a ford taurus that i was thinking about using

The biggest problem I've seen in all the years that I've been involved with all of the the Luvs I've owned and all the years I've been on this site...is it seems to me like some people don't understand what the hell "RTFM" stands for. Or why we all have two eyes, two ears, but only one mouth....and all of that is supposed to be managed and controlled by a brain. Plus all of that should be utilized to it's fullest potential before we use any tools with our own two hands.

Then people start using terms like "POS" and "FUBAR" to describe their truck and terms like "PITA" to describe them. And pretty soon...they just fade away.

And the rest of the people here that aren't too cheap to invest a few bucks in a decent manual, aren't too lazy to use the search button here, and are willing to utilize fully the advice given by those of us here that have labored over these great little trucks successfully for a lot of years...well they all just seem to continue to grow and prosper. And their trucks keep running strong.

Myself personally...I am grateful as hell for what I've been given by this site, Ben and his hardworking staff, and it's members. I have rarely ever logged in here and nosed around without learning something new. I only hope I've given enough back that was worthwhile.

So if you wanna know what I think is the biggest problem with these trucks...IMHO it would be the truck's owner.
