80 luv was running one day - then wouldn't start the next. You can pop the clutch and engine will start and run indefinitely, but won't start with the starter. We replaced the starter. (old one tested good, but was original and we thought it might be the switch) The new starter sounds as if it is getting power, but not enough to spin and engage the engine. Any ideas out there? Thanks in advance for any suggestions and help.

Dirty or corroded battery terminals?

Bad ground at battery or to engine?

Did you load test the battery?

I agree with the ground. Run a jumper cable from the negative battery terminal to the starter body and try starting it. If the starter cranks it right away, you just need to trace those ground points. Those things can rust/corrode where they bolt to the engine/chassis and not be visible. The cables themselves can get frayed and not have enough wire left to carry the voltage too. Let us know what you find.

there is also a chassis ground that goes from the ground cable to the frame ..check that and check the other grounds from the engine to chassis/body.

The problem I had with mine was the one that goes to the frame. I would check that one first since it is the one that gives power to the ignition switch.

WOW - thanks for all the input. We will put LUV U through the inspection in the next day or so. We do have newer battery (2 yrs) and did go ahead and put the battery booster on it just to double check and that didn't help. Battery cables look good and connections good and clean.

I don't think we have checked the ground connections as suggested - and haven't tried to "jump" directly to the starter. My husband and I will give this a go tomorrow. Again - thanks for all the suggestions. We will keep you posted!

Took a cruise in the ole chevy luv truck this evening!! It is the ground as you all suggested. We connected the booster box directly to the starter, and she cranked right over and fired right up. Now all we have to do is find the culprit connection. BUT - if I need my motorized wheelbarrow for some garden projects - I can get her started up for duty. My husband and I thank you very much for your input - we sure appreciate the direction and advice received. Guess we will keep her for a while longer!

Remember to actually remove the ground wires where they connect. Just because they "look" good on the outside, dosen't mean they aren't corroded where the surfaces are!
