Howdy guys, been a while. luv's been livin in the garage while I haven't had the time/money to work on it. Thought maybe you guys could help me troubleshoot something.
Lots of variables as I got back from a cross country trip but long and short...
Turned key on, hear fuel pump (always on relay bypass) when I go to start it up, it tries really hard even after sitting for a while, and when it has started it has run really poorly. like almost at 1/4 speed. sometimes itll putter for a bit and then start running normally, but lately seems to just die off and not want to run. got a new (rebuilt) hitachi carb on there and I installed a 2nd fuel filter just before the carb. I noticed it's not filling up all the way. So I THINK my issue is not enough fuel, that said. the fuel pump is like a year old. I did run it pretty hard on my trip I Guess, is it possible the fuel pump itself still works but is unable to pump the necessary psi? I use to think a fuel pump either worked or didnt. the problem has been getting progressively worse until now where it's not able to turn over all the way. So if I replace the fuel pump, since the carb is rebuilt, do I require a pressure regulator? I've heard that the hitachi needs 7psi, but the pump I've got that has worked in the past is 2-4psi. Am I mistaken here?

My LUV pump is 4-7psi. A stock LUV carb has a return line, so it's hard to over pressurize. I would replace the pump.

AHA! Ok, so if they make a 4-7psi, and I got a 2-4 on there, which one is the 4-7? Brand name that is, I went to the auto parts store and they told me they only carry a 2-4. I figured the 'overflow' tank being all the way in the bed would prevent me from needing a regulator.

if you go to an O'reilly's auto parts store, the performance section should have a pump there that is a 4-7 psi pump. i have one on my new truck and it works great.

it runs you about 50 bucks give or take.

otherwise, ask for an airtex e8012s Fuel pump. it's made for something else, but runs 5-9 psi, and carries a 1yr warranty. depending on your location, it may run you about 60 to 75 bucks.

before anything else, change the filters and see if that helps at all. if it does, problem solved. otherwise, change them anyway and get a new pump.

Well, I got a new fuel pump on there, works well as far as I can tell... luv still wont turn over, but seems like it's getting close when I hold the gas pedal down. My pops thinks the timing may be off, stretched chain (does that even happen?), busted tooth on one of the wheels, I don't understand all that too great, I get that things turn and make pistons move in perfect timing but... I'm novice once we get past the valve cover gasket. :) Dad had it towed to his place, has some mechanic guy he knows thats gonna work on it, I told him I wanted to be there when it happens, we'll see. So still no go go gadget luv, patience I guess.. :(

So yeah,... I think I may be a victim of the hitachi carb. disconnected the auto choke thingy on the back of the carb. looks like a 6ish sided socket. bam. no issues. ... so i guess that thing is keeping it on choke the whole time and its one of the parts that wasnt replaced during the rebuild I guess. f'ing lame. Is it possible to switch it out with a 'manual choke'? or... What might be my options? should I say F it. sometimes you piss away 200 on a carb, and just buy that webber i hear so much about? and does the overflow still work with other carbs?

You can fit a manual choke cable to it with a little effort and the fuel return probably wont' fit a different brand carb if you expect it just to bolt on.

Ok, Fit with a manual choke. ... Not at all easy to use. I can see why they went the way of the steno graph. Any Hints or tips on how to use these things? I usually start by pedal all the way down, clutch in, turn key and try to slowly push the choke in till it finds a sweet spot... lately I have to keep the pedal down till it warms up all the way... then its tenuous. when driving it wants to die when ya first get going, but on the freeway, Hell, Runs Great! She's still got a lotta' zip and is a blast to drive once its warmed up.. but this is the middle of summer and I can barely get it started, I'm concerned about winter temps... hmmm... we shall see...

One last thing, my 77 had a filter inside to OEM pump. The end caps unscrew.
