Well I do have a two core radiator and the fan is installed the right way (you can't really install it backwards on these). The aftermarket temp gauge I have has been placed at two different places: one right at the bottom of the block on the driver's side and the other where the stock temp gauge goes and they both read the same. The only thing I can think of is maybe the radiator is slightly clogged somewhere but not enough to cause it to have any back-pressure.

I'm actually thinking about cutting out the radiator support and putting in a radiator off of an Lt1 I had and use it with electric fans. That way I KNOW its staying cool and I free up around 5 hp or so from getting rid of the manual fan especially since I had the stock alternator rebuilt to put out 65 amps.

I thought you had gone through the radiator already.By all means get the rad cleaned i had one years a go that would idle cool but would heat while driving and would get hotter the more you drive. Look in the rad. if you can and if there is a heavy build up of calcium on the tubes they will be plugged down in side.

I did have it cleaned but that was several months ago before I rebuilt the engine. But I'll try to have it done again but I still don't think its the radiator. But I think I'm going to go with the Lt1 rad. with the electric fans. I find them more reliable.

If you think that replacing the radiator with a bigger one will fix the problem you are wrong, it will only mask a problem. Have you thought of taking it to a radiator shop for their opinion before you sink money in it? I know you said everything is perfect but something is wrong, a second opinion is needed.

I still think replacing your radiator with a new stock radiator or recore will fix the problem. What happens is a few of the tubes will plug, and this will force the water through the remaining open tubes, but at too fast a rate for proper cooling.
The water has to move at a rate that gives it time transfer its heat to the cooling air.

Well if it is the radiator then I won't be masking a problem and also the only thing I will dump into it is time. I already have everything I need to do it. Plus I would rather have electric fans and a slightly larger radiator than the one that's in it. Not trying to be rude or anything.

Nope, not rude. Replacing it like you are doing I believe will work also. Let us know the results.

This also might sound stupid but did you check your fan belt?if it is slipping it won't cool as good.

Yep fan belt is fine. And I checked the radiator for calcium buildup and it has some which makes no sense since it was cleaned last July and was cleaned good. :?: any ideas on why it would have buildup that fast?

When did the problem start, was it right after the rebuild or what?

No the engine has been rebuilt for about 4 months now and has ran fine with no problems until recently with this overheating problem.

I believe having the radiator cleaned again would help. You have buildup in it for some reason and if you can see it...think about how much is in the radiator you can't see. As far as installing the fan backwards...it can be done, has been, and the truck was driven for about 20,000 miles with it that way. There is a picture of it out here but I won't point out who it is. If there is no coolant loss and full of coolant...I'm still saying circulation issue. Replacing the solid fan with an electric might help with the HP but I'm not sure it will be noticeable.

You can get build up like that if you use water that is real hard or that has been run thru a water softener. i would have it rot out againg and use pre mixed so you dont add any water from the garden hose. no joke i have seen it with my own truck.

I went to school for automotive machine and have sen a lot of weird stuff. If the frost plugs were not pulled out of the block I have seen the frost plugs break down and cause blockages in the coolant passages in the block. Also another dumb one are you using the new dex-cool antifreeze? I have heard some issues with that causing weird deposits.

a question.

do you have a coolant recovery tank?

if you don't, get one. that will help clue in as to what is happening. also. if you haven't already, change the radiator cap. you might find that air is entering into the system and causing an air burble to develop.

same story that happened to me when i had the last truck
